If the Rooskies could find our periscope mast sticking 1 meter above the surface in the North Sea, they sure as hell could find a Nimitz or Forrestal class super carrier.

I wonder how much of a future the super carrier has with examples of modern jeep carriers loaded with F-35s proving to pack quite the punch.

They detected your periscope, from a satellite?

Meet the USS Virginia.

How do you know they are up in the saddle on all Ivan's Boomers?

Maybe in the Cold War they were all hands on deck to follow the Boomers from port back to port, but I don't know of they are still doing it, considering all the other things the Americans have to do.

The Virginia and like class subs' mission is to do exactly that...hound Russian submarines...all day...all night...all year.

No, they could detect our masts with airborne patrol radar.    Our sats provided daily "red force" locator imaging, with an intel briefing each night before the wardroom movie.   All surface traffic in the region was profiled by the spooks back home and reported with our message traffic, also from a satellite.   Soviets had the same capability, so it's not hard to vector patrol assets based on daylight fixes/locations.

Virginia the Cold Warrior?  No its not, that was SSN-21 Seawolf Class, which was cancelled after four.   SSN-774's are mutlimission submarines and their specialty is sneaking into the littoral and parking there to do SIGINT and support SEALs

Correct...more points for each day in trail.    It's a fun game.

What were you doing in the North Sea, I thought you guys were supposed to be on a slow patrol to nowhere out of the way? You're up in the North Sea with an SSBN?  To what purpose?

Not hard to figure out....our Poseidon birds only had a range of 2500 to 3300 nautical miles, depending on MIRV configuration.   So that means North Sea, Norwegian Sea, and above the Arctic Circle to be within target package strike range.   This was the 1970's and early 1980's....Ohio Class and Trident missiles were just coming on line.

You pop up to grab your traffic and get a NAVSat fix, which takes a few minutes, and a petty officer monitors the ESM suite for radar painting at known search freqs.

So ain't nobody hiding a 90,000 ton super carrier and battle group escorts & oiler.

Economics trumps Virtue.

Agreed...over 150 Tomahawks...fire all day. It's the Henry Repeater of submarines.

Which ones do the SEAL teams use...with the special deck aft the coning tower?

Trident II (D-5) came much later...we did retrofit some of the Poseidon boats with Trident C-4, which had much better range & accuracy.

I think each converted SSGN was to deploy two SEAL Team enclosures (ASDS)...but the program got cancelled.

So what were your thoughts on having to launch? Just assumed you'd never have to do it, or did you wrestle with it?

Pretty sure they beat that bone out of you before you're sent to submarine work.

Beat what bone out of you?   Your humanity and capacity for free and independent critical  thought?
