Jealousy. ---> Now I am going back on topic or else mediocrity might take me in. Here are 3 arguments pro and against. Is hockey a gladiator sport?YES: Physicality Entertainment Risk of injury NO: Lots of Regulations. Gladiators, on the other hand, were forced to fight for their lives in an arena without such regulations. More Strategy Same as rules or regulations, but the sport is Non-lethal. The gladiators' battle was mostly lethal. If you mean me, you're off topic. Anyone off topic is subject to moderation by other forum members. A kind of Citizens self-moderation rule is in effect. Humberto J Diemer Posted March 30, 2023 Report Posted March 30, 2023 Hockey is one of high intensive team sports, Good to watch. Quote
SpankyMcFarland Posted November 14, 2023 Report Posted November 14, 2023 A few weeks ago, Adam Johnson, a hockey player in Britain, died after being struck by a skate. In what is I think a surprising development, the player that did it has just been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/article-man-arrested-on-suspicion-of-manslaughter-after-death-of-former-nhler/ https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/article-american-hockey-player-adam-johnson-dies-after-freak-accident-during/ Quote

I can't think of a single forward or defenseman that has all of their teeth. Heck, even goaltenders haven't been spared. Quote
herbie Posted June 16, 2024 Report Posted June 16, 2024 OMG 50 years later complaining about the little fighting that's left in the game? it isn't Tiger Williams and Dave The Hammer Schulz and physically pounding the Russians so bad they ran away anymore. Haven't heard the term "Chicken Swedes" since long before the Sedin's were Canuck heroes, either. You aren't gonna stop tempers flaring in a game like hockey ever, but things are A LOT tamer now. impartialobserver Posted June 25, 2024 Report Posted June 25, 2024 Its a bit shocking that there has not been a single mention of the Edmonton Oilers run to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Yes, they lost in game 7 but it is hard to come back from down 3 games to 0 to force a game 7. Quote

I was watching that game 7 with the wife, and you can just see the air having been sucked out of Edmonton based on the monumental effort they got knowing their playoff lives were on the line. Once you've reached that goal, that do or die energy is sapped and its just another game. The pressure is then relatively even, in Florida not wanting things to skio away, and Edmonton not wanting to put all that effort, for nothing. Edmonton should be proud of its team, though. Quote

And to lose against the flow of the Game at that. Gotta give credit to the Panther's defence when the Oilers controlled the puck overwhelmingly. Quote

They knew the key to their win, was to suffocate # 97. The team is deep, but without him dominating, looked like a team missing the slightest edge to get it over. Razor thin margins like that, I would try to retain the core of the team. Quote

I am not a sports fan of any kind '''' As a kind of outside observer, my question is should this really be an acceptable part of the "sport" in Canada? It seems kind of like the ancient gladiators who went into the Roman coliseum to fight lions... I too am not a sports-fan. I have no desire to choose a side in a zero-sum game. ==== As a young boy, I imagined myself as Bobby Hull or Gordie Howe. Late after dark, I skated and then walked home - very cold. And as it turns out, all for no purpose. 1 Quote
August1991 Posted August 17, 2024 Report Posted August 17, 2024 Nowadays, I still skate. I am jealous of the guys who cross-skate backwards. I never learned how to do that. Quote
