Antares
I often see sportsmen, usually while celebrating a success, pointing skywards. Circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that this is a religious action. As far as I can tell, the sportsman is communicating a message to us viewers about a supernatural power (which I'll refer to as a god) that deserves credit for the sportsman's achievement. Evidently, that god is located overhead. Interestingly, the finger is always pointed directly upwards, no matter what the time of day or season of year, and no matter where in the world the sporting activity is taking place. Therefore the sportsman must believe that his god is located directly above all points on the Earth's surface, thus forming a continuous entity that surrounds, but does not include, the Earth. A hollow sphere, perhaps?
Guest
Really they are just saying: "Everyone look at me! Look at how religious I am". I can't imagine any of them actually believes a God gives a toss about their touchdown/goal/basket/etc.
bush_cheney2004
Many athletes derive confidence and faith from religious spirituality, particularly in victory. Such a belief system can be a psychological edge in training and competition. As for pointing up, it is probably more accurate than pointing to a municipal bus garage in Buffalo, NY (to borrow a thought from the late George Carlin).

A Blue Jays Fan? A Lakers fan? What about when they get traded? They must think God is pretty fickle...

Where do think "OMG" came from ...John Travolta ?

They don't need to let everyone in the crowd and watching on TV know that they are enjoying the favour of their God.

They also thank team mates, coaches, parents, fans, and their agents .

JamesHackerMP
Reminds me of that episode of Family Guy where the guys decide to confront God, to keep him from interfering with football. "God should stay where he belongs...like telling people where they can stick their wieners...."
