Big Guy Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 I have been following the Masters both in the news and on TV: http://www.pga.com/news/golf-leaderboard/the-masters-leaderboard I have a PVR so I make a copy of about 3 hrs of coverage at a time and then stop and fast forward through the coverage of interviews and commercials, at intervals stopping to live speed at times of "action". This involves dexterity and concentration. I also find it tends to empty the room very quickly. I find the 3 hrs takes about half an hour of activity to view. I have been enjoying the coverage so far - from the bogey free Spieth masterpiece to the Ernie Els 6 putt stick handling showcase. Looks like Jordan is hot and the weather expected to deteriorate. I figure Spieth has the best chance to win but maybe Garcia, Casey and Rose with a chance if they get hot. Any projections? I usually can watch for about an hour and then I get inspired to go out and play a round. Love Spieth's game. My projections... 1. Jordan Spieth 2. Rory Macilroy 3. The_Squid Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 Poor Els! That was so cringe-worthy!! And sad... 1st frickin hole!! How do you go on and play the other 17 after that??? I liked Ricky Fowler prior to the start, but he blew it unfortunately. He's a character! Golf needs some characters! Henrik Stenson is my pick to win... but he's going to have to make a major comeback... Probably Speith. He's kicking ass after round #1. I played a few days ago and scored 5 pars for a round of 92. Damn good for me! My putting let me down.... Quote
Big Guy Posted April 8, 2016 Author Report Posted April 8, 2016 (edited) No love for Jason Day? You really DVR golf? I have no particular favorite since Palmer. I used to play the game and have enjoyed watching it the last 30 years. Three years ago, on the Sunday of the final round of the masters, we were committed to an out of town function. I set my PVR (DVR?) and copied the 7 hours of coverage. When we came home, I surrounded myself with snacks and settled in. I anticipated a few hours of viewing. Once I got the hang of what speed to fast forward and pick which golfers I wanted to see then it became easy. During that 7 hr presentation, fast forwarding through interviews, commercials and players out of the running, I saw every set up and shot of the top 5 players in one and a half hours. I was beginning the same process for Jays games and then lucked on to "Jays in 30" - a summary that does the same thing. The golf thing can get tricky but these days the coverage for each shot includes a visual, indicating the hole and which shot the golfer is taking, making it easier to follow. It also helps to either know the course well or have a layout in front of you when speed watching. The_Squid Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 I hope you enjoyed playing that par 3 course. haha Par 72 course... I almost pulled an Els on the 1st 2 holes... got the ball on the green in regulation then 4-putted twice in a row! Quote
overthere Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 I was beginning the same process for Jays games and then lucked on to "Jays in 30" - a summary that does the same thing. I am a hardcore baseball fan and like the full drama exp;erience of watching the whole game. But I have heard several people mention (knowing I love baseball) that they have become fans mostly because of 'Jays in 30'. All the thrills, none of the tedium- a good move for sure by Rogers. Wilber Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 Weather has been too good the past couple of days to watch golf on TV so I played instead. Will probably watch some on the weekend though. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
overthere Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 This has been an amazing winter and so far we have skippped straight into summer. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
Big Guy Posted April 9, 2016 Author Report Posted April 9, 2016 Just finished watching my copy of to-days action. Dre may be correct: Rory Macilroy seems to be the only one able to figure out to-days course. Feeling sorry for the leading amateur showing why he is an amateur, going into the 18th in second place and then getting a triple bogey on the last hole. If the weather gets worse, my money will be on Rory. I understand that he was brought up in and learned in challenging weather conditions. Sad to see Phil putting all the "back stuff" on his approach shots and sucking the ball right back into the pond and relegated to watching the tourney on TV tomorrow. Hal 9000 Posted April 9, 2016 Report Posted April 9, 2016 Golf has never been better as far as young equal talent. When you consider Spieth, Day, Fowler etc, then guys like DJ, Scott, McIlroy and Reed etc. I always like McIlroy, but its really hard to dislike Spieth - even though he looks like King Joffrey. I'm sick of Mickelson and sick of seeing him choke. I know he's won the Masters 3 times, but I always watch him with the expectation of the impending meltdown. Move along Phil! Big Guy Posted April 10, 2016 Author Report Posted April 10, 2016 So Speith starts the final round one up. It will be interesting to see if his parody of Ernie Els on the 18th green will stay in his mind. I continue to cheer for Jordan. He seems like a nice young gentleman and his celebration with his special needs sister after winning the last Masters was a memorial moment. Guest Posted April 10, 2016 Report Posted April 10, 2016 Ooh, it's won by a Yorkshireman. First the Cricket, and now the Golf. Is there anything we cannot do? Quote
Wilber Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 I was a little disappointed with Speith at the cabin presentation but he seemed to have recovered from his funk by the public ceremony. All in all, a pretty classy guy though, it's hard to remember he is only 22. Hat's off to Willet, he won that tournament. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Big Guy Posted April 11, 2016 Author Report Posted April 11, 2016 An enjoyable tournament to watch. Bonehead decisions, fantastic shots, 3 holes in one with one of them a billiard shot. A sure thing turning into a battle with major positional shifts. Meanwhile, the floral background of the course made one look forward to spring gardening. Willet had lots of opportunities to fold but progressed steadily. I agree he deserves the win. The_Squid Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 I wish I saw the last round. I listened to it on the radio. Not very exciting. Every golfer has this kind of round. .. Speith's just came at the wrong moment. Quote

Boges Posted April 11, 2016 Report Posted April 11, 2016 Willet did not win that tournament, Spieth lost it by hitting the drink twice on a par 3. Quote

No, Willett played a solid, basically mistake free round. He was -5 for the day, tieing two others for the lowest round. Speith didn't really collapse, it was a quadruple boggy on 12 that did him in on Sunday. Speith was surviving on his putting. He was struggling with his swing all week and it finally bit him big time on that one hole. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC

And to the point where he had to fight back to even have a chance at the end. He was over par on the last few holes most of the week. Considering how much trouble he was having with his swing, but still in the lead after 54 holes is an indication of how good he really is. The way he was hitting the ball, I wasn't really surprised he couldn't pull it off. Someone within range was going to go low yesterday and one of them was Willett. Speith shot 1 over yesterday which wasn't a terrible round if you look at the leader board, but not good enough to win. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC

It was good enough to win if he didn't look like a 110 handicap for one of the holes. That's a choke job. Sure Willet was solid, but no one cares about Willet. Heck it was good enough if he only hits the water ONCE! The headline is that Speith blew a 5 stroke lead in the back 9. That's all that anyone will remember from this tournament.
