Big Guy Posted January 15, 2016 Report Posted January 15, 2016 While surfing the net, I recently found a web site which rates the top 200 movies of all time rated by the number of tickets sold. That is supposed to be a better qualifier then money generated but I do not know enough about cinema to comment. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm I do not consider myself an avid movie goer but was surprised that I had seen 173 of these films. Part of that must be my age and part because my grandchildren will drag gramps into a popular kids movie. How many of these have you seen? Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
overthere Posted January 15, 2016 Report Posted January 15, 2016 I did not go down the whole list. I would say if it is made in the last 30 years, I have about a 95% chance I've seen it in a theater. If it it is older, about a 90% chance I've seen it somewhere. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!
bush_cheney2004 Posted January 15, 2016 Report Posted January 15, 2016 (edited) Near as I can tell, the list is only for American domestic gross ticket sales adjusted for inflation in the United States. Some indexes include Canada as part of domestic North American sales. Many foreign/foreign language films are not included. Edited January 15, 2016 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
Wilber Posted January 15, 2016 Report Posted January 15, 2016 (edited) While there are some excellent movies near the top of the list, it is proof that money doesn't equal quality. Edited January 15, 2016 by Wilber Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Moonlight Graham Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 (edited) They should adjust it by both ticket price inflation AND population inflation. For ie: the US market ("domestic"), shouldn't it be tickets sold per 1000 people? Moonlight Graham Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 Ticket prices are insane now that they've added more expensive features like 3D and IMAX and AVX etc. Ticket price is a bad comparison and means nothing now historically. Hal 9000 Posted January 17, 2016 Report Posted January 17, 2016 I'm glad "Porkey's" made the list. Bryan Posted January 17, 2016 Report Posted January 17, 2016 They should adjust it by both ticket price inflation AND population inflation. For ie: the US market ("domestic"), shouldn't it be tickets sold per 1000 people? I completely agree. "Money Grossed" is not a marker of anything when comparing previous movies. Total tickets sold matter, and tickets per capita matters even more. Quote
