Harper certainly wasn't perfect, and his fiscal record is definitely not perfect.

Peefect, no. One of the best we've ever had, definitely.

Trudeau...Mulroney...Harper

Trudeau - dealing with highest interest rates ever, 2 global recessions

Mulroney - lower interest rates, no recessions

Harper - lowest interest rates, one global recession

Summary - Trudeau bad, Mulroney forgiven, Harper wonderful

It seems that to a Conservative everything is forgiven because they have some excuse to blame their incompetence on.

And for you it's blame the Tories no matter what.  I'm willing to give Martin a pass for the transfer slash to slay the deficit.  He had to help fix trudeaus mess.

But that's the thing - it was just as much Mulroneys mess.

That trudeau started.  Mulroney had to pay high interest which are up a lot of the budget.  Mulroney negotiated nafta and started cutting spending to reduce the mess

Lower rates than Trudeau Sr had to pay.

While Mulroney did gut some individual programs like the Canadian Forces, the one and only year he reduced his overall spending was by $700 million where Trudeau Sr. actually cut overall spending by $2.4 billion 2 years earlier.

And by record time, you mean slower than the actual record time, I'm assuming, since Chretien/Martin eliminated the deficit within 2 years of saying that they would.

Suuure they did. As long as you start your timer two years before they ended the deficit.

Perhaps try selling that idea to the provincial leaders who had to suffer through Harper's reign of ignoring them. Two meetings in nine years.

I think the topic gives us a lot of latitude. Note the OP simply says title says it all. Predictions are based on lessons learned from history.

The Liberals first budget was 1994-1995 fiscal year.

The budget was in surplus by the 1996-1997 fiscal year.

By your own cite their first budget was 1993-94, and they had a deficit then and in 94-95, 95-96, and 96-97. YOUR OWN CITE says their first balanced budget was in 97-98.

Folks,

This thread is locked due to interminable thread drift.

Anybody interested in continuing the discussion laid out in the Opening Post is welcome to start a follow-up thread, call it Predict how Canada will look like in 4 years For Real, This Time! if you want.  If the 2nd thread stays on topic, it will be merged with this original thread.

Anybody interested in discussing other things is welcome to start a new thread.
