Michael Hardner Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 Why is Freeland going on American TV though ? That is strange to me. Is she doing this to raise her own profile or is there some reason that Canadian policy needs to be discussed on American television ? There would be more outrage if Harper's energy minister, say, went on Bill Maher to defend our Canadian reluctance to sign on to Kyoto. Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! socialist Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 I like Bill Maher (I went to Toronto specifically to watch his live show once). My problem with him is that he's very superficial on many issues. Freeland seems like a loon to me. She doesn't give me confidence in our government as she is a high ranking minister. Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.

Or was it just a typical facade? Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.

She's a frequent guest dating back to far before her time as an MP. Quote
Smallc Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 Freeland seems like a loon to me. She doesn't give me confidence in our government as she is a high ranking minister. She's a very accomplished journalist and manager. Quote
Smallc Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 (edited) Kim Campbell is another frequent guest on the Bill Maher panel. Edited November 21, 2015 by Smallc Quote
socialist Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 She's a very accomplished journalist and manager. What makes here an accomplished Journalist? Who considers her accomplished? What did she manage? Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.
Smallc Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 What makes here an accomplished Journalist? Who considers her accomplished? What did she manage? She was a Managing Editor at Thompson Reuters in the US before becoming and MP. She worked in many other countries in high profile positions. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 Gee...I knew American television was very important to Canadians...but not this important to Liberal cabinet members. Maybe Maher's producers can invite ward councillor Carolynn Parish next ? Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

She worked in many other countries in high profile positions. What high profile positions in other countries? She didn't do herself any favours by appearing on Real Time. I guess she's an elitist who knows people in high places that can give her a phony rave review. But I won't fall for elitist nonsense that the average Canuck falls for. Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.
Smallc Posted November 21, 2015 Report Posted November 21, 2015 What high profile positions in other countries? She didn't do herself any favours by appearing on Real Time. As I said, she'd already been appearing for years. Quote
msj Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 Who considers her accomplished? What did she manage? Well, she managed to be 1 of 13 Canadians banned from travelling to Russia in March, 2014. Maher often has guests on his show who are unknowns to many people. I recall seeing David Frum, Anthony Weiner, and Jillian Melchior on the same panel on the November 6 episode. I knew 2 out of 3 (Melchior is a reporter for The National Review). David Frum is the son of Barbara Frum although others may know him as a senior editor at The Atlantic. Just because a person doesn't seem important to you doesn't mean they aren't going to make it to his show. That's why his show is so often good: it's a blend of famous people and smart people (although I think Freeland has come across as very dumb here - like Ben Affleck did a while ago). Quote If a believer demands that I, as a non-believer, observe his taboos in the public domain, he is not asking for my respect but for my submission. And that is incompatible with a secular democracy. I think she should have skipped it. She's a minister now. There is a certain line that has to be towed. It made her look dumber than she is. Quote

Michael Hardner Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 I never understand the accusations of being an elitist, especially because the accused persons never seem to be associated with snobbish statements or behaviors involving looking down their noses at people. As such, it strikes me often as an expression of frustration at someone's own low self-esteem. Be elite, Socialist ! It's within you to write a column, earn money, attend a political fundraiser... aim for excellence in all you do. Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
