Icebound
WTF is this? http://i.cbc.ca/1.3088978.1432723107!/fileImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/16x9_620/mother-canada.jpg The USSR was full of these self-aggrandizing behemoths towering over the landscape. Is this what we are trying to emulate??? The people over there are trying to tear these things DOWN! cybercoma
It's an awful idea that will destroy the natural beauty of the area. Cape Bretoners aren't too impressed with it.
Wilber
Yup, Pretty Ugly. National Parks are supposed to be about the park, that's why they are National Parks.
Black Dog
Why is it turning its back on Canada? Edited June 2, 2015 by Black Dog
Big Guy
Reminds me of "Christ the Redeemer" on Mount Corcovado in Brazil. Art is in the eye of the beholder. These mammoth undertaking have always received mixed and negative reviews at the time of implementation but in time have become enshrined landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty. Maybe in time, when somebody asks where Cape Breton is located, they can be told, "under the Mother Canada" statue.
Michael Hardner
It's "mother Canada" also. Is there a gender angle on this story ?
cybercoma
Why is it turning its back on Canada? Her arms are open to the dead overseas.
Michael Hardner
I kind of like the massive scale of it. Bigger is better.

Black Dog
Her arms are open to the dead overseas. And she's showing Canada her ass. The thing might make sense if it was positioned further inland, but based on the renderings, the only people who will be able to appreciate the thing from the front will be those at sea. Anyway here's another take on the project: Profit, not war dead, dubious focus of ‘Mother Canada’ project From the foundation’s website: “There will be exclusive opportunities for major donors and partners to be recognized in the naming of halls, galleries and displays throughout the memorial site,” including The Commemoration Ring of True Patriot Love, We See Thee Rise Observation Deck and With Glowing Hearts National Sanctuary. Some business and donor names will be on brass plaques. Not on view, however, will be the names of the war dead. They, says Mr. Trigiani, would be available online. Digitized. Guest
It's an eyesore. No wonder locals are against it. It doesn't matter what it represents if it is reviled. It reminds me of a statue that used to be on display in the grounds of a temple on Marine Drive in the lower mainland. Bigger, maybe. Not quite as ugly. But still... Icebound
... After a little research on the web, I was wondering if Harper's frequent visits to Ukraine have influenced him: https://maidantranslations.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/screen-shot-2014-05-09-at-2-43-22-pm.png
