Big Guy Posted May 15, 2015 Report Posted May 15, 2015 (edited) Ottawa Senators hockey teams coach, Eugene Melnyk requires a liver transplant to survive. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=767689 The team owner is asking fans to see if they are compatible and help his coach. Canada and the provinces have a process used to prioritize and perform organ transplants. Is it ethical for anyone to use their celebrity status or affiliation status in order to try to jump the queue - if that is what he is doing? I understand that those with adequate funds can find donors (for the right price) in third world countries. Should those with lots of money go overseas for organ donors and leave the organs available here for those who cannot afford to go out of the country? Boges Posted May 15, 2015 Report Posted May 15, 2015 (edited) It's a living donation though. I understand with someone who's dead being harvested for their organs and those organs going to the most needed. But a person can donate an organ, while alive, to whoever they choose. It would be comparable to a doctor not allowing a relative or a person in need to donate their kidney because they deem the organ to be needed by someone else more. Or a donation of blood in an emergency. NOPE! X-person over here needs that blood more, we'll give it to them. From what I gather Livers also re-generate so it's not even a permanent inconvenience to the prospective donor. As a side note, we did have a thread awhile back about a wife who wasn't allowed to donate a portion of her liver to her husband because he was an alcohol and the doctors felt it would be a waste of medical resources. But that's a different debate. Edited May 15, 2015 by Boges Quote
Wilber Posted May 15, 2015 Report Posted May 15, 2015 I agree with Boges. No one is going to tell me I can't donate an organ to a family member or friend if they need it. When I'm dead, they can do whatever they want with them. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
Hal 9000 Posted May 15, 2015 Report Posted May 15, 2015 Being a match for Eugene Melnyk would be like winning the lottery. Big Guy Posted May 20, 2015 Author Report Posted May 20, 2015 There were a "surprising" 2,000 phone calls, 500 donor applications, 12 potential living donors identified, one was chosen, the operation was a success and the coach of the Ottawa Senators will live. What message is one supposed to get from this incident? Guest Posted May 20, 2015 Report Posted May 20, 2015 Not just that I suspect. However, I'm not judging. I think one ought to be able to sell one's organs to the highest bidder. All of them, if one so wishes. Quote
