socialist Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 Here is the work of a great teacher and a great thinker who taught a class about privilege. I'm happy to hear that whit privilege is becoming a very important topic in social justice. Things like this give me hope against all the greed and corruption. http://www.buzzfeed.com/nathanwpyle/this-teacher-taught-his-class-a-powerful-lesson-about-privil Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.
Ash74 Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very Liberal Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth. She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his. One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school. Taken back, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many college friends, because she spent all her time studying. Her father listened and then asked , ‘How is your friend Audrey doing?’ She replied, ‘Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She Is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She’s always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.’ Her wise father asked his daughter, ‘Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA, and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.’ The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired back, ‘That’s a crazy idea, how would that be fair? I’ve worked really hard for my grades! I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!’ The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, ‘Welcome to The Republican party.’ Always liked this one Quote “Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains.”― Winston S. Churchill There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him. –Robert Heinlein

Ash74 Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 Can I suggest you read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It is not very well written but it does tell a good story. "Let there be no misunderstanding about me. If it is now the belief of my fellow men, who call themselves the public, that their good requires victims, then I say: The public good be damned, I will have no part of it!"Hank Rearden at his trial, book 2, chapter 4 Quote “Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Don't see where ya got that but ok....... I don't have a problem with taxes if they are affordable and are not going to harm the economy. You curse corporations but many pensions are funded by stocks of corporations. That makes the pension holders owners of said corporation. So when the corporations don't make money than the pension fund does not make money. Guess how teachers pensions are funded. Now my problem with taxing the hell out of corporations is that they can leave the country. Quote “Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Moonbox Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 Don't see where ya got that but ok....... It was a dumb story, sorry. On the one hand it completely ignores the real problem people have with today's capitalism (mainly the accelerating income gap and the corruption/abuse of the "system") and on the other hand it's just a pain painfully clumsy analogy. I actually winced when I read it. It's not the corporations that are the problem. It's the people running a lot of them. WWWTT Posted November 23, 2014 Report Posted November 23, 2014 Can I suggest you read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It is not very well written but it does tell a good story. Beware! BEWARE! Quote: If by clever you mean she was able to dupe racists into thinking their racism isn't racism. Ayn Rand was a racist in the same way Glenn Beck is a racist. She knew she couldn't argue against the fundamental evil that is racism, so she attempted to cloak white supremacy in an economic philosophy and people like her have found it useful to do the same thing ever since. She was the Glenn Beck/Karl Rove/Lee Atwater of her time, trying to use language to justify a white supremacist ideology. Her ideas are still popular with many, including her namesake Rand Paul.
