bush_cheney2004 Posted August 25, 2014 Report Posted August 25, 2014 Wait a minute...whatever happened to slapping the Canadian flag on your Chinese backpack and wearing your 'Merika Sucks' t-shirt as the sure fire way to get lots of love from terrorists and locals around the world ? On Guard for Thee Posted August 25, 2014 Report Posted August 25, 2014 What Canadians should be especially wary of are the countries/peoples that our and our allies governments have severely pissed off, but don't expect any warnings for that. What Canadians should be especially wary of are the countries/peoples that our and our allies governments have severely pissed off, but don't expect any warnings for that. It depends a lot on how you plan to travel. If you are going to hitch hike around with a back pack that's one thing. If you plan to stay touristy and ride the sun tour bus from the airport to the hotel and back again, that's differnet again. And if you are working for an established firm with infrastructice in place and "boots on the ground" that's something else again. The warnings from GoC are generic and apply to the lowest common denominator which is of course the safest approach for teh gov. to take. Quote

Well unfortunately, as was inevitable, "Merikans" caught on and of course it didn't take long until so did everyone else so the trust was blown. Quote

I believe that the latest Harper foreign policy has assisted in Canada being more identified with the mistakes of the USA. As shown in the UN, the Canadian flag no longer sends the message that it used to. Big Guy Posted August 25, 2014 Author Report Posted August 25, 2014 What is the difference in foreign policy between the current Government and the previous Liberal Government that has caused Canadians to be identified as Americans? There is still the perception in many countries of "the ugly American". I believe in the past the wearing of the Canadian flag was to show that you were NOT American because you might sound and look like one. I also believe that our most recent government has become a "me too" to American foreign policy as regards to the Middle East and Europe. There is very little for foreigners now for them to distinguish between Americans and Canadians. I do not remember the Harper government making any stand in any country that deviated from the American position. Remember the hand slap given to Canada in the 2010 when it was turned down for a spot on the UN Security Council. Canada will not even run for the seat in 2014 to avoid another embarrassment in front of the world. Some here will discount anything the UN does but it does represent every world power - and they have sent a message. Harper has basically said - OK I got the message and gave the UN the finger. I believe that the rest of the world now views Canada as a "me too" subservient to USA foreign policy. Have not prior Governments held shared policies with our neighbour to the South and largest trading partner? Again, what specifically has the Harper Government done to increase the potential threat to Canadians traveling abroad? Quote
Topaz Posted August 28, 2014 Report Posted August 28, 2014 Let's remember that Harper said Canada wouldn't pay ransom but that's exactly what he did about 2 years ago to free two Canadian government workers from Africa. Canadians didn't find out about until an interview with the worker, revealed ransom had been paid. I don't care one way or another if its paid, but I don't want to be lied to by the PM. Quote
