Several other countries are closing their borders in Africa. This is quite disturbing. Either it will be contained and the outbreak small (as in maybe a little worse than what we see), or this will rage out of control. Putting many systems under heavy strain. Something to keep watching.

I think it's absolutely absurd to bring Ebola patients to North America. Asinine might be a better word though.

Oh good grief. Sure, let's treat Ebola patients like we did with aids patients!

Come on, haven't we learned from that experience to treat people with respect and dignity and not to go off the deep end. It has been stated time and again that we have the facilities here to treat Ebola patients carefully and with all safety precautions in place.

Shady, you are doing all you can to encourage this fear mongering and lack of empathy for these patients. Do your research!

I suggest that you do your research. Ebola is spread much much easier that aids, so to compare the two is dishonest. Regardless, I'm all for treating these patients with respect and dignity, and with the best medical professionals. But there's no reason why the necessary equipment and manpower can't be made available closer to where the problem is. Putting North America at risk is completely unnecessary.

They are american citizens. They sacrificed their life to help these people. We owe it to them, to bring them home and give them the best possible care we can. We can also learn from these patients and how they respond to treatment. I have done plenty of reading on this, probably much more than you.

We owe it to them? As American citizens? Are you all of a sudden American? They can still get the best possible care, and we can also learn from these patients and how they respond to treatment, when they're treated at the source, instead of bringing them to North America.

We owe it to North American civilians. They cannot get the best possible care until they are back home.

Good grief, are you all of a sudden anti American? Most of your posts indicate the exact opposite. Citizens should have the right to return to their country, don't you think?

As for "North America", Canada or Mexico can do as they please, but the U.S. is going to repatriate citizens who can be treated under quarantine conditions. There is no formal protocol to protect "North America" from ebola, and if the reports out of Canada are true, airline travel from Africa will introduce the virus anyway...without any controls at all.

Yes, let the troll attack Canada.

Nigerians are not trolls. The story was reported by Canada's own state broadcaster. Blame them....

I am addressing your thorough analysis of Canada. Because you are so accurate!

Urban Dictionary: North America

What Canadians say when they mean both the United States and Canada together, usually not including Mexico. Americans typically use this word to describe all of the US, Canada, and Mexico together.

Americans typically don't know there is anything beyond America. Never mind north or south.

If ebola gets into the general population, it won't be this way.

I would argue it's already spread to the general population. Everywhere. The number of African countries declaring emergencies and closing their borders is growing.

Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Be patient. When/If Ebola ever starts to become a danger to the West we will find a cure. When "civilized" white guys and gals are in danger we seem to find the money to throw into finding a cure. ;)

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

Yes. That's why AIDS was instantly cured after spreading to the "West". Also why cancer is a thing of the past, along with heart disease and stroke.

Your ridiculous tangent about white dudes aside, yes, it is likely Ebola will soon have a cure and/or vaccine, because it is a much easier disease to deal with medically.

There is no cure for Aids, but we have certainly come a long way. The prognosis for people with HIV has significantly improved over the past two decades and many people with HIV can live long and productive lives.

Heart disease and strokes can be mostly eliminated if people adopted a healthy lifestyle.

Many forms of cancer can be cured if caught early enough and survival rates have increased significantly.

If Ebola hits North America or Europe, we will see significant amounts of money thrown at research projects. Yes, that means white dudes and gals.

Yes yes, it's all about race (and gender). Sorry but I prefer to talk about the issues at hand rather than seeing the world through a pre-conceived notion of everything have to fit into a narrative of racism and sexism.

The reality is there has already been significant research on Ebola for many years. That's why experimental treatments like ZMapp were already available to try this time around... because research has been ongoing and has already received significant funding. Long before this outbreak and any hysteria about the potential spread of Ebola to the West.
