So it seems UNICEF has begun a campaign in India trying to get Indians to use toilets to defecate. Hundreds of millions of them, in rural areas, in towns, villages, and in cities, simply squat and do their business wherever they happen to be. It's almost impossible to avoid stepping on the leavings when around popular temples or near beaches (!).

The campaign is "Take your poo to the loo" if you can believe it, completely with mascot (!) and jingles!

It kind of blows my mind that standards of hygiene and cleanliness, to say nothing of dignity, would be that low anywhere, but particularly in a country which is both a nuclear power and which is sending rockets into space. Yet only 2% of Indian towns have any sewage system. It just reinforces how incredibly different other cultures are, in that they can live like this. And it's not poverty. Africans don't do this. Neither do people in other third world countries.

If you live in an rural area, I can see relieving yourself outdoors being a more environmentally sound way of insuring you are replacing the nitrogen and other nutrients back to the land!

But in an urban setting!!!!

No wonder the Ganges river is so disgusting. Anyways, apparently they didn't learn as much from the British as I had thought. I guess I can officially cross India off my places to visit list, at least for a generation.

India is set to overcome China as the most populous country in the world. That in itself is a historic event as as long as there have been any records on populations of various countries China has always been the first.

I don't know? Never been there, I thought that maybe it was a natural Hindu belief or something like that.

All they have left is another 110 million people to go. But China is changing it's one child policy, so we'll see how soon they pass them.

China uses toilets by the way.

If you think this doesn't happen in Africa or other 3rd world countries then you've never been there. I have and I can assure you it does. India has a large problem due to the combination of poverty and huge population density.

Actually China has closer to 140 million more people.

I forgot to add Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Those regions do not have restrictions on family size and have nice toilets!

Taiwan is not part of China except within the delusions of Chinese nationalist war mongers.

Yes it is!

They will eventually re unite, just like HGK and Macau.

Keep in mind that Macau was a Portuguese colony for literally centuries!!! They still reunited. No bloodshed either.

Here's a picture of a Chinese toilet!

Taiwan is no more part of China than Canada is part of the US.

Extremely unlikely since Taiwan has absolutely nothing to gain from unification and a lot to lose. Of course, mainland China is turning into a dangerously aggressive military power and it is quite possible that they will try to annex the island by force.

And what about the Chinese toilets???

Aren't you going to comment on the toilets?

I went through a lot of work to post those toilets!

How about you post something about a toilet from India?

Where do "Africans" shit?

Places like this don't need sewage systems, which is very expensive. At the very least, they need to shit in outhouses...the way our great grandaddy;s used to do it, instead of natural bodies of water...especially fresh water.

Yeah! Taiwan is no more part of China than Crimea is part of Russia!

Yep, me too.

And I think I'll cross China off my list too.

Little shovel, problem solved!

Taiwan is China! The people from Taiwan are Chinese, just two political differences. Glad you noticed.

You wouldn't go to China because of some grungy pictures? Oh well, your loss, not Chinas!

Why do you keep repeating this nonsense? Canadians are different from Americans who are different from Australians despite the fact that the ethnic profile of the population is almost the same. i.e. differences in politics make for a different country.

Kimmy's analogy to Crimea is only narrowly applicable because both Crimea and Taiwan are living next to aggressive military powers who covet their lands and will use any excuse to grab them. The fact that China wishes to annex Taiwan does not make Taiwan part of China. What matters is Taiwan sees itself as a separate country no matter what the despots in Beijing say.

No wonder the Ganges river is so disgusting. Anyways, apparently they didn't learn as much from the British as I had thought. I guess I can officially cross India off my places to visit list, at least for a generation.

And yet, it's kind of fascinating to read about how strange and bizarre the country was, a place I really haven't spent a lot of time thinking about. This below is a really interesting writeup by a guy who went there. The incredible amount of humanity awash in filth and poverty seemed to have quite the effect on him.

The first thing that strikes you about India is how dirty it is. In a word, the place is disgusting. All of it. The entire country. Never before have I seen mountains of garbage the size of a small house stacked on the side of a road, in broad daylight, in the middle of a city, repeatedly. Dumpsters tipped over and overflowing. Mounds of trash — wrappers, cups, papers, napkins, strewn all about, mixed with sludge from the soda and urine and spit coagulated from thousands of daily passersby.

Like the dust, the garbage never ceases. And along with the garbage, there is an unending stream of humanity. It is impossible to spend a full day in the middle of a major Indian city without lobotomizing yourself trying to figure out where the hell all of the people come from. I’ve been to Hong Kong. I’ve been to Manhattan and Beijing. I’ve been to Mexico City. And the swarm of humanity crawling through India’s cities is unparalleled. There’s no comparison. Many streets more closely resemble a bee hive than a functioning human society. When I flew into Mumbai, there were homeless people sleeping on the tarmac. Take a moment for that to sink in: the city is so crowded and disgusting that people decide they’d rather sleep on the airport runway.

http://markmanson.net/a-dust-over-india

Then there's this delightful report.

Why does Indian society suck? It’s hard to sum it up. First of all, you have one of the most callous and uncaring ruling classes, with the usual upper middle class allies, found on Earth. Missing the good old days? Go to India. Nostalgic for debt slavery and bondage, feudalism (the real deal, not the semi-feudal modern kind), slavery – child and adult, child labor, shit in the streets like the Middle Ages Europe pre-Black Plague? Go to India. It’s all there in spades. Even more appalling is that no one in India gives a fuck. The bourgeois either live in denial or could care less if the lower classes live, die, or flop, gasping, somewhere in between. The poor are too stupid and/or ignorant to know better, and many think that their savage and inhuman abuse, like something out of 1400′s England, is actually religiously ordained by God Himself.

Yes, that's what I was getting at... the sarcasm was lost on some, apparently.

China does use toilets, and yet China is considered the most unhygenic nation on earth, worse even than India.

India uses the streets as toilets, China uses the water, earth, and air as a dumpster.

I'll need to see a link citation!

I've been there 5 times and spent several months there. True, warmer climate countries that are still developing I believe are not as hygienic. But it is improving!

Little history lesson here for you kimmy, after the surrender of Japan, Mao and the fascists had a civil war in China and the communists won, while the fascists retreated to Taiwan under US protection. Mao considered invading early on, but Korean conflict brought an end to that. It has never really been considered worth invading because the people would be the ones that suffer the most. Same reason why HGK and Macao never were, but eventually re united! The people in Taiwan are Chinese, speak Mandarin dialect (but still use traditional form of writing) and consider themselves Chinese. It's funny how you and TimG believe that the two are not the same, but the Taiwanese and Chinese see themselves the same!

As far as your second comment goes, want to explain how it's different in the west?
