Alternative to Northern Gateway pipeline emerges...

Recommended Posts

Apparently Forst Nations groups don't actually oppose oil pipelines.... it's the money that is an obstacle. Or rather who gets the profits. Interesting that at leat two of the proposed ports for export of the oil are not far from Kitimat .

Follow the money.

"David Negrin, president of Aquilini Group, said the project is slowly building steam as First Nations along the route recognize there is a viable alternative to the Enbridge proposal.

At a press conference in Vancouver attended by at least 20 aboriginal chiefs from B.C., Calvin Helin, the president of Eagle Spirit Energy, said the group has the support of the majority of 30 First Nations in B.C. and is working on getting the rest to get what he called the social licence to operate within their territories.

Also attending the meeting was Luigi Aquilini, the patriarch of Aquilini Group,"

"They also opposed the idea of transporting raw bitumen in pipelines. As a result, Eagle Spirit would build a refinery to process the oil into light crude for transport, Helin said. Two locations, one in Alberta and the other in Prince George, are being considered, Negrin told reporters at a press conference.

Helin said Eagle Spirit Energy has a number of possible routes and terminus points, all of which depend upon getting support of affected bands, and any route where a band is in opposition would be removed.

He said he could not discuss much of the details because of non-disclosure agreements.

However, according to Negrin at least three terminus ports are being considered, including one near Prince Rupert, in the traditional territory of Lax Kw'alaams, Helin's First Nation. as well as Anyox, even further north. A third location hasn't been named publicly because negotiations are still underway."

"follow the money"... or follow the different journalist commentary/assessment/quotes:

Art Sterritt, executive director of Coastal First Nations, said he doubts the Eagle Spirit project has the support it claims.

Mr. Sterritt, reached in Fort Nelson where he was attending a First Nations energy conference, said native opposition to oil pipelines remains strong because of environmental concerns and he hasn’t heard of any significant support for the Eagle Spirit plan.

“I’m here with the head of the Carrier Sekani tribal council and others at this natural gas conference,” he said, and none was endorsing the Eagle Spirit project. “They had heard there are a couple [of bands] Calvin has been able to convince but the reality is you’ve still got … all these other [bands] saying no.”

Mr. Sterritt said Eagle Spirit’s lack of support can be measured by the fact only two small bands sent chiefs to the Vancouver news conference.

Everyone knows, uncontroversially, that different native groups have different views on different issues...and that differences of opinion exist within groups as well.

I mean, that they're like every other grouping of human beings in this way is evidently a terrific weakness! :)

Clearly the idea here is to prove that "First Nations groups" are, well, hypocrites.....the single and only crucial point being made in the OP.

The alternative to the Northern Gateway pipeline and the Keystone pipeline exists now, already.

It involves long trains of oil cars, such as those that exploded in Lac Mégantic.

Maybe Robert Redford and David Suzuki should start to lobby against not only pipelines, but all transport of any oil products.
