socialist Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Posted June 22, 2014 You know there Socialist, as you grow up, you will learn that there are times that it is perfectly ok not to answer a question, particularly when you are going to look like a complete ass if you do answer it. So what you are telling us is that because the teachers lost 10% of three weeks wages, they need $5,000 to make up for it. So, let's do some math. Most teachers spread their pay over 44 weeks and forego getting paid over the summer holidays. So, divide by 3, multiply by 10, multiply by 44. You are saying that the average teacher gets paid $733,330.40 per year. Well, that certainly clears that question up. I now know that for sure everything that they are doing is for the students!! So, if they really are getting paid $733,330.40/year, could you explain the food bank idea? BTW, the average teacher makes something in the range of $75,000/year, so the most she lost was $511.36 due to the 10% wage rollback. Must be living pretty close to the financial edge if $511.36 is considered dire. But, hey, anything is possible when you are dealing with teachers. What do you know. BC Teachers are fighting for ALL employees. It takes teachers to lead the fight. http://castlegarsource.com/news/teachers-strike-more-about-bc-governments-contempt-constitution-pay-or-working-conditions-31782#.U6Yl4vldUue Thankful to have become a free thinker.
Derek 2.0 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 And...I know loggers with 8th grade education who know to put money away for fire season and snow etc etc. I know fishermen, pickers, tree planters, yard people etc etc that all work seasonal and all have to deal with income interruptions - that's life! Teachers have spent every year of their life since the age of 5 knowing when school is in and when its not. If they haven't figured things out by now or are living beyond their means, then that's their fault. Am I wrong in assuming, unlike contracted teachers, these listed examples are entitled to EI benefits during work stoppages?
Hal 9000 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Am I wrong in assuming, unlike contracted teachers, these listed examples are entitled to EI benefits during work stoppages? Good point! These people mostly are entitled to EI, but they still have some amount of income interruption. It doesn't change anything I said though. The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so. - Ronald Reagan I have said that the Western world is just as violent as the Islamic world - Dialamah Europe seems to excel at fooling people to immigrate there from the ME only to chew them up and spit them back. - Eyeball Unfortunately our policies have contributed to retarding and limiting their (Muslim's) society's natural progression towards the same enlightened state we take for granted. - Eyeball
Derek 2.0 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Good point! These people mostly are entitled to EI, but they still have some amount of income interruption. Hal 9000 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Well it does, those groups mentioned by you will receive EI, teachers will not......~55% of wages is better than ~0% Good grief, they've missed one cheque. Even you agree that it's a stunt. Derek 2.0 Posted June 22, 2014 Report Posted June 22, 2014 Good grief, they've missed one cheque. Even you agree that it's a stunt. Very soon to be two, plus the wage rollback.......which translates into ~10% of their annual income, and of course, contract teachers can't collect EI....None the less, I’d assume that most Canadians would find it difficult to contend with a loss of a months wages.
Derek 2.0 Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 (edited) And Ready's response: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/b-c-teachers-strike-vince-ready-declines-mediator-job-1.2684027 Veteran labour mediator Vince Ready has declined to mediate the dispute between the B.C. government and the province's teachers' union. Ready's reason for declining both sides' request to work as a mediator is simply that he is too busy. Edited June 23, 2014 by Derek 2.0

Derek 2.0 Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 Any bets he knows its hopeless and does not want to put his rep on the line? I believe his reasons......once his name was first mentioned, I looked up his website, saw his calendar is well booked through the Fall and called it a day.

If they haven't figured things out by now or are living beyond their means, then that's their fault. How do you know these folks you mentioned above do not at times rely on food banks when they aren't working. Even perhaps a christmas hamper and toys for their kids. I bet many do but don't like to discuss it because of embarrassment, shame, etc. I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. Hey, maybe you should become the president of the BCTF. At least you were smart enough to look at his website, something that appears to have eluded Mr Iker et al. Just outstanding leadership once again displayed by the TF.

Pct2017 Posted June 25, 2014 Report Posted June 25, 2014 Pretty funny how even though our whiny BC teachers are the the middle of their bi-annual strike, interest in them has died, even on this forum. They say the opposite to love is not hatred, but rather apathy. Well, it is a select few who love the BCTF, but their is certainly a growing apathy towards them. It is actually a brilliant strategy, much like dealing with a young child who is throwing a tantrum. Simply ignore them. Eventually they will give up and accept whatever scraps the taxpayer feels like tossing them.

Eventually they will give up and accept whatever scraps the taxpayer feels like tossing them. And perhaps more importantly, during this final week of the school year, sans any bargaining, there are already grumblings amongst members over why they are even striking……couple this with the strike pay (lack there of) and the handling over Vince Ready, the BCTF executive could very well have rough seas ahead.
Hal 9000 Posted June 25, 2014 Report Posted June 25, 2014 Ive got school age kids and to me, it's just summer. I see these teachers (usually 4 or 5) sitting drinking coffee and I have to remind myself that there is a strike. - Eyeball
westguy Posted June 25, 2014 Report Posted June 25, 2014 teachers don't have it so bad. After all, they only work about 175-200 days a year, they have lots of holidays, most work only 6hr/day, they have great benefits, many have tenure, they have defined benefit pensions, most work no more than 6-7 hrs/day. I am thinking of becoming a teacher - I nned the time off.
socialist Posted July 23, 2014 Author Report Posted July 23, 2014 A student's question for Christy Clark. overthere Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 Its not even the end of July, plenty of time for the government to hire some replacement workers for this important service. Please, think of the children! Science too hard for you? Try religion!

They don't pay taxes and until they're 18 they don't vote. So they shouldn't even consider addressing the Premier until they become adults, get jobs, have responsibilites, and start paying taxes.

With your rotten attitude, I can say it's a good thing you aren't an educator. Children are meant to be seen and not heard. They need to learn to have some respect for their elders and in the case of the Premier their superiors. If YOU're not teaching them that as an educator, then you're failing them. overthere Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 If YOU're not teaching them that as an educator, then you're failing them. cybercoma Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 We wonder why these kids grow up with an overinflated sense of entitlement. Well here it is.
Pct2017 Posted July 26, 2014 Report Posted July 26, 2014 A student's question for Christy Clark. BCED continues to suffer because of a corporatist agenda. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/justine-taylor/bc-teachers-strike-2014-student_b_5497950.html?utm_hp_ref=tw Young Socialist, where have you been, you little Scamp. We missed your inane comments around here. So, a grade twelve student writes a letter and this is newsworthy to you. Well, I guess that makes sense as she is likely your peer. But, let us take a look at what she says. First off she states that she likes public school more than private school so much that she cannot wait to get there every day. And this must be true because she goes there 279 days a year, which is odd given that teachers "work" about 185 days a year (can you imagine a job where you get one day off for every day worked!?!?). But, hang on. Our whiny teachers here in BC are always harping that the "over-crowded" classrooms are not conducive to student learning. Young Justine obviously missed that part of her teachers indoctrination. But her greatest mistake is asking in a letter to the Premier just when she will be able to write exams and attend class. Hmmmm, shouldn't she be asking Mr Iker that question. Or maybe at her tender age, she does not realize that it is the greedy, whiny teachers who have withdrawn their services because the mean old government will not provide them with massages and Viagra. When one group is on strike there Justine, they and they alone can call it off and get back to work.
