Does Harper really think he's helping the peace process?

Visiting at a time when even members of the government have raised fears of a boycott of Israeli goods if talks with Palestinians do not progress, Harper said some critics of Israel were indulging in a "new anti-Semitism".

"Most disgracefully of all, some openly call Israel an apartheid state," Harper told the Knesset in Jerusalem after meeting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank.

"Think about the twisted logic and outright malice ... It is nothing short of sickening. But this is the face of the new anti-Semitism," he said, prompting applause from the floor and heckles from two Arab-Israeli lawmakers, who then stormed out.

What a ... !

Apparently Harper forgot to study up on what his own government has on paper, namely that a portion of Isreali settlements are illegal. Once again he sticks his foot in his mouth, and I don't blame those guys for storming out. It's a difficult subject of course, but I'd have to bet that his landmark visit will be remembered mostly for his poor choice of words.

Hes just a politician being politically expedient. On the same day he blabbed on about supporting Israel, he gave a similar speech about supporting Palestine, and gave the Abbas government 60 million dollars.

This kind of thing is fun for all you political hacks to waste your time on, but its just political posturing and sloganeering.

Yawn... As if the primeministard of Canaduh is even a noticable player in the ME conflict.

don't be fooled. harper is all israel, all the time.

this $66 million will be to prop up abbas and his corrupt government and to strengthen the PA's security forces. these 10,000+ men are headed by a u.s. general.

American General Keith Dayton, in charge of organizing a 10,000-member Palestinian security force, even admitted that he was strengthening Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah against Hamas, telling a US audience in May 2009 his force was “working against illegal Hamas activities.” According to Al Jazeera, between 2007 and early 2011 PA security forces arrested some 10,000 suspected Hamas supporters in the West Bank.

if that's not blatant enough, how about this:

We don’t provide anything to the Palestinians,” Dayton told the Associated Press in June 2009, “unless it has been thoroughly coordinated with the State of Israel and they agree to it.” For instance, Israel’s notorious internal intelligence agency, the Shin Bet, vets all of the Palestinian recruits, according to US government reports.

Good point.

After meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Harper announced that Canada will provide $66 million to the West Bank and Gaza.Canada looks forward to a bright future for all Palestinians, one in which security and prosperity are enjoyed in a viable and democratic Palestinian state, Harper said in a prepared statement.

"Palestinian state" ...?

But Harper refused to support a Palestinian state at the UN.

The Middle East is never easy - and seldom clear. The US voted against it as well and many Western countries simply abstained. Harper - along with Conservatives, Liberals, NDP and Canadians want a two state solution.....and BTW.....Harper and Baird have always said that building settlements on disputed land is "not helpful". What would be helpful is to see Hamas change its Constitution and acknowledge the right of Israel to exist. Is that really too much to ask?

In an extraordinary lineup of international support, more than two-thirds of the world body's 193 member states approved the resolution upgrading the Palestinians' status from an observer to a nonmember observer state on Thursday. It passed 138-9, with 41 abstentions.

Germany and Britain were among the many Western nations that abstained. Joining the United States and Israel in voting "no" were Canada, the Czech Republic, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Panama.

In a departure from its previous opposition, Hamas, which refuses to recognize Israel, said it wouldn't interfere with the U.N. bid for statehood, and its supporters joined some of the celebrations Thursday. With its newly enhanced status, the Palestinians can now gain access to U.N. agencies and international bodies, most significantly the International Criminal Court, which could become a springboard for going after Israel for alleged war crimes or its ongoing settlement building on war-won land. However, in the run-up to the U.N. vote, Abbas signaled that he wants recognition to give him leverage in future talks with Israel, and not as a tool for confronting or delegitimizing Israel, as Israeli leaders have claimed.

That is the norm for that. If they did not storm out something would be wrong. Enough of the bull. And he was right on all accounts, this world is going back to the 30's. Heil Hitler. How has sitting on a fence for how many decades helped. It has not, the old way has never worked .And thank god harper has the balls to say what had to be said.

So if I understand your point, because Chretien may have done something wrong, we should now forgive Harper. Sorry, but what was, was, and what is , is.

No just don't act like it is only harper and everyone else never did any thing wrong. Because chretien was a leader of a corrupt government which got away with more shit then we will ever know.

You realize Likud has the same thing in their consitution about a Palestinian state right? They plan to keep the entire west bank.

Likud Party Charter states that....

a. “The Jordan river will be the permanent eastern border of the State of Israel.”

b. “Jerusalem is the eternal, united capital of the State of Israel and only of Israel. The government will flatly reject Palestinian proposals to divide Jerusalem”

c. “The Government of Israel flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan river.”

d. “The Jewish communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza are the realization of Zionist values. Settlement of the land is a clear expression of the unassailable right of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel and constitutes an important asset in the defense of the vital interests of the State of Israel. The Likud will continue to strengthen and develop these communities and will prevent their uprooting.”

So Harper should get away with it too?

I thought he was all for cleaning up corruption, being transparent and accountable, ethical and morally upstanding.

Are you saying Harper should act no better than the old Liberals?

I don't care about the corruption, but singing Hey Jude at the state dinner in Israel was absolutely unforgivable. He has to stop singing in public now. It's not funny anymore.

If you have to ask, you haven't been paying attention.

So where's the missing $3b?

Whose pockets got lined with that?

Were you even born during the chretien yrs????

I even remember 'the Dief'. :)

Jacee - I know you're out there on the edge - but with statements like that, you lose any credibility that some folks might give you. Give the $3b fabrication a rest. Nobody ran off with any of it. That was immediately verified by the Auditor General. If it hadn't been, the opposition would be all over it - and the CBC of course.

Are you suggesting the rest of the media is so biased in favour of the CPC that it wouldn't report on a missing $3B?

At least Rob Ford can blame the alcohol and crack when he embarrasses everyone who voted for him. Who are the enablers who are telling Harper he's talented enough to perform in public?
