I don't know how widespread this game is, but it is quite sick. What is happening to the moral fabric of Western society? I hope this is an isolated incident that doesn't become a trend. The USA is becoming a sick nation.

This is a sick game indeed.

A person in a group is dared to knock a random person out in a sneak attack. This has resulted in serious injuries and will lead to a death. Cowards and punks.

I agree with you. This could easily be you or me. I haven't heard of this happening in Canada, Is the root cause of this poverty?

It's part of the breakdown of civil society, at which libertarianism has been chipping away for decades.

To me it is more of a problem where we are conditioned to be helpless in many situations. Defending yourself and standing your ground is frowned upon these days. Always gotta wait for authorities to show up to resolve anything.

It's not liberalism or progressivism that is the problem. We can be liberal while still respecting each other. Helps in life just to not be that dick head who does this kind of crap.

People who partake in this activity are cowards and weak minded losers.

Random physical assault has never been considered a 'moral' thing. Even non-random assaults are looked down upon by society. That this is a supposed game doesn't change a damn thing. I would say this isn't a game at all. Just the usual inappropriate lashing out at someone/anyone to vent frustrations by young macho-challenged men.

I'd say poverty is the root problem. The rich get richer and those who are struggling get no help from the rich. We need a government that isn't afraid to tax those making a good living at a higher rate to cut down on crime caused by poverty.

It's not a poverty issue. It is a bad parenting issue.

If poverty were the problem we'd all be dead. There are more than enough poor people around to do the job.

The problem is a combination of things. As GostHacked says, a lack of parental discipline is one factor. A lack of empathy engendered by today's media and is another. I would imagine sheer nastiness is a big part of it too. Some people are just rotten.

I dunno..... Its easy to think that after watching such a disgusting spectacle... but 50 years ago the lynching of blacks, were still common-place. Based on the statistics Ive been able to find violent crime is lower than it was a few decades ago.

I think the only difference is that every single person on earth has a video camera in their pocket nowdays, and theres a viral video industry that makes it easy to see these things. Im not sure that that really represents any kind of "breakdown" of society. These types of crimes are much more visible now, and publishing them in high def for the world to see certainly makes them easier to emotionalize over. But the fact is they happen LESS than they did in the past.

I think thats part of it, but I dont think thats anything new. Theres been random violent beatings in our culture for a long long time. The difference now is that that we actually get to watch them as video broadcast to the world instead of just a blurb in some local news paper.

Theres nothing new or exotic going on here. Just young people with too much testosterone and alcohol in their systems misbehaving and starting shit like they always have.

The lucky thing is that now all these morons post video to youtube and other viral video outlets which causes an awful lot of them to get caught.

Cutthroat capitalism can also be blamed. Has anyone ever seen Michael Moore's outstanding documentary about Capitalism? If you haven't you need to. It explains how bad capitalism is and how it really hurts and keeps many people down.

Capitalism is not the problem. It would be nice to actually have capitalism, but what we see is more fascist activity. (government plus corporation)

Capitalism as a concept is sound in my view. What we see is not capitalism. Kind of off topic though, my bad.

This is a case of bad parenting and not putting the right values in your kids at a young age. Sure peer pressure can result in this, but if you teach your kids right, they will simply walk away from those types of idiots and find themselves some real friends. I don't mind practical jokes and general asshattery now and then. But sneaking up and knocking out an unsuspecting person is really freakin low. Karma catches up eventually.

So, all violence stems from bad parenting?

Unlimited economic growth has the marvelous quality of stilling discontent while preserving privilege, a fact that has not gone unnoticed among liberal economists.

Much of it does. Sure there are societal pressures, but if brought up right, those pressures won't have that much of an influence on you.

If I had a kid and he/she took part in this kind of activity, the kid is going to get knocked out as well. And considering the circumstances, I don't want to hear about child abuse or other crap like that.

Aside from warfare and mental illness, I'd say the overwhelming majority of violence stems from bad parenting, yes. But that's kind of obvious. By definition, good parenting is parenting that results in a kid that grows up into an adult that does not engage in violence or criminal behavior and is successful in society.
