Shady Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 Shady: George Bush's multimillion dollar abstinence programs for Africans only made AIDs worse. Actually, it was multi-billion dollar education, drug and treatment programs. You don't know what you're talking about. Quote

scribblet Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) Again ultimate cop-out. How dare Canada accuse the UN of wasting 350,000$ on helping drought and famine, when the Canadian Cons were going to spend millions upon millions of jets we don't need. To try to compensate themselves before the world? https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTNVYJ_L8VYl0MFFVrxpe_LFFLnUDM7hAhM_UaIEoWbM3gsdhFw https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTbsdJO4Lm4JSoI__rRhzJCgPLvx1CcaJO9OgLU9pTWgHPSRVFEww Really, that's funny and I've no idea what " To try to compensate themselves before the world?" means. Never mind, doesn't matter all in this context. Do you have any proof that this convention has actually done anything to improve drought conditions, has there been an assessment done. Less than one-fifth of the $350,000 we contribute to this convention actually went to the program. Given the U.N. track record and activities I for one applaud the decision to pull out. This is a drought discussion convention, not a drought fighting convention and there is little this group can do or is doing on that score. It would be better to insist that these African dictators/despots spend some of their own fortunes they are amassing on the backs of the people and our contributions, start looking after their own. kairos Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) One fifth of 350,000 is much better than millions upon millions going to total waste on F35s. Even if the govt chose not to fund the UN program, that would be OK if it actually spent the money on reducing drought and famine more efficiently. Instead none of it is now going to drought and famine. That's not taking the high road, that's taking the evil road. Spending multimillions on F35s instead of this is just the same as what the Harper government is accusing African dictators of doing spending and diverting masses of public money on the military instead of aid to those who need it. Shady Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 Millions of infections caused by 'Abstenence Education for Africans,' too. Abstenence is a small part of what's being taught and has no bearing in the drugs and anti-virol treatments provided. Drugs and treatment provided without any UN conference. Quote
kairos Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 National defence is a constitutional responsibility of the federal government. UN desertification conferences are not. Especially when the threat is non-existant. Its a good way to funnel resources down a hole just like the African dictators do that the Harper govt is hypocritically complaining about. Quote

kairos Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 (edited) Unless you're paranoid. African leaders have more of a justification to collect some cheap ak47s at 5$ a pop for defense than Canada has to buy fighter jets at 135 million a pop which will never be used to actually defend Canadian soil and then have the gall to say that African leaders are spending too much on weapons. Smallc Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 Well, when we have the problems of Africa, you may have a point. The reality is, this UN conference was of little value to us. Quote
Smallc Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 That doesn't in any way show the value of the conference. Quote
kairos Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 (edited) An international conference to address famine and drought is of far more value than the right wing throwing a tantrum like spoiled little children and doing nothing to address the problem. Edited April 1, 2013 by kairos Quote

Keepitsimple Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 (edited) Likewise, the push to "cleaner" fuels in the midst of Global Warming fears in the UK is literally killing thousands of people: As biting winds brought temperatures down as low as -15C (5F) the Met Office upgraded its Level Two health alert to the more serious Level Three. Charities warned that the toll of weather-related deaths among the elderly is soaring as the bitter cold, combined with record energy prices, leaves many struggling to survive. The National Federation of Occupational Pensioners said deaths among its members had doubled since the New Year. It warned that as many as 26,000 elderly people could die this winter, the worst death toll since 2008/09. Chief executive Malcolm Booth said: “Horrendously, deaths among our members are more than double the average so far this year. “Many health conditions that affect elderly people are worsened by cold weather and there is a definite risk of the highest national winter mortality figures since 2008-09. “We keep hearing stories about members imprisoned in one room because that is all they can afford to heat and some have so little cash they have to choose between eating and heating. This is totally wrong.” Link: http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/379680/Coldest-winter-freeze-of-the-year Edited April 1, 2013 by Keepitsimple Quote Back to Basics

So when the UN and others clean up thier act and quit looking the other way and most of it is stolen , gives us a call. Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.
