Eyrie Posted January 5, 2013 Report Posted January 5, 2013 Wow! First non-video post by me. Astounding, right? But kidding aside, Toronto mayor Rob Ford is due in court on Monday to Appeal in order to keep his seat as mayor or Toronto, as I'm sure many of you already know. I'm curious to see what the people here think. Do you think Ford should NOT have to go to court, or do you think he should have his seat as mayor revoked after the many transgressions that happened with him? I personally think that for his rather unpleasant ways in which he dealt with some situations, along with using the letterhead of Toronto with his mail, that he should certainly go to court and possibly have his seat revoked. What do you guys think? Quote
cybercoma Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 It would be nice to say that a convicted politician should no longer sit, but the appeal makes it such that the outcome of the case has not been finalized. This unfortunately goes for any politician. You can't have them removed from their seat and replaced, only to have them win the appeal, no longer being convicted, and still be punished vis-a-vis their removal from office. I think Rob Ford is a dirtbag and quite possibly one of the worst "politcians" in Canadian history, but he has every right to appeal and keep his seat until his case is finalized. Keep in mind that Toronto has a weak mayoral system anyway. He's practically powerless on council and just represents another vote. Council holds most of the power in Toronto. Quote
Big Guy Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 If the judge in the original trial had the option of allowing Ford to continue in the position then he would have done so. This was a mandatory minimal sentencing aberration that should be a message to the far right wingers. Follow the spirit of the decision. I think Ford should be removed as mayor (as is the law) and that Toronto Council appoint him to the mayor’s chair. He has lost all power, credibility and control of the Executive Council. Let him serve out his democratic mandate and save the taxpayers the cost of another election. His chances of being re-elected in the next election are inversely proportional to the time he spends in office. Besides, we need the entertainment. Quote Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.
Boges Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 I think council re-appointing him is a real possibility. In a year people will start campaigning for the 2014 election. A by-election would be a huge waste of money. Especially since no one on council saw fit to challenge Ford on this issue in court, (even his worst enemies) it was only some politically motivated private citizen. Quote
Black Dog Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 I'll say this on Fordo: he's got a set of brass ones. Rob Ford calls for ‘major sanctions’ as plagiarism claims mount against school board director Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is calling for “major sanctions” for Toronto District School Board director Chris Spence who admitted to plagiarizing parts of an opinion piece in the Toronto Star and appears to have done it on other occasions. “You can’t be the director of education and plagiarizing, let’s put it that way,” Mr. Ford said of Mr. Spence. Perhaps Spence could just defend himself by saying he never read any guidelines about plagiarism. Quote
guyser Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 Perhaps Spence could just defend himself by saying he never read any guidelines about plagiarism. Good one ! Quote
Boges Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 Teacher can't threaten to expel students for plagiarizing then forgive the TDSB's head teacher for the same crime. Quote
Boges Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 Chris Spence quit. Bad week for people named Spence. Quote
Black Dog Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 Teacher can't threaten to expel students for plagiarizing then forgive the TDSB's head teacher for the same crime. It's almost as if there are rules people should follow that go along with positions of responsibility. Crazy. Quote
scribblet Posted January 25, 2013 Report Posted January 25, 2013 He's won his appeal, he's back on the job. I hear the Toronto star is in mourning Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
Black Dog Posted January 25, 2013 Report Posted January 25, 2013 He's won his appeal, he's back on the job. Yup. First thing he did after his presser today was to go to Don Bosco to see his football team. He exits this particular fiasco with his priorities intact. Quote
Shady Posted January 25, 2013 Report Posted January 25, 2013 Ford wins! Ford wins! Ford wins! Woot!!!! Quote
