Smallc Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 How does this work exactly? Colorado and Washington State are just not going to enforce federal law, but the DEA still has to? AFAIK, that's correct. The DEA and FBI will still be after you. Quote
cybercoma Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 It's been decriminalized in some places - same as Canada. Canada has no mechanism for decriminalizing things in some places and not others. The Criminal Code is a federal document that applies to the entire country. Court decisions can create precedents in certain provinces over others, but that doesn't change the law, just enforcement and litigation. Quote

Smallc Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 That again though, isn't completely accurate. Federal law in the US makes marijuana completely illegal, for medical use, or otherwise. It doesn't matter what the states say, because the federal law is above that. Quote

cybercoma Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 (edited) And that map is wrong. It shows it legal in Oregon, but not Washington State. It was Washington that legalized it. It failed in Oregon. Someone must have been high when they made it. Edited November 7, 2012 by cybercoma Quote
WWWTT Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Their system of government is more democratic than ours, hence free. Our PM, if he has a majority, has more power to dictate his will on the nation. The American president has to work with 2 houses of politicians which weakens his power. We have more red tape, taxes and regulations which clutter up our lives. Theoretically yes, practically no. Politics in the US is a millionaires club, the chance of any Joe Blow or Jane Do entering politics is slim. I interpret a countries freedom as the ability as one of its average citizens realistically successfully entering into this arena.Fat chance in US! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! WWWTT Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 These are good points, and I mostly agree with you – although I could debate either side. Here are some points that support the idea that Canada is freer than the USA: -730 of 100,000 people in the US are incarcerated, vs. 114 in Canada -On average Canadians are safer than Americans (freedom from fear) -There is a higher poverty rate in the US than in Canada (freedom from want) -The average legal drinking age in the US is higher than in Canada -I would guess that there is more freedom to smoke marijuana in Canada than in the US -There is more tolerance of homosexuals in Canada -You are freer to get an abortion in Canada Also, historically, Americans fled to Canada due to slavery and the Draft. Canada is bigger in land area. Canada is wealthier than the USA on many per capita metrics. The USA has a much larger debt than Canada. Canada is wealthier in terms of natural resources. Excellent job on proving why Canada is the more "Democratic" state! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! Pot smokers have more rights in Iran. haha Of course hundreds of people are executed in Iran for drug offenses, but pot smokers have more rights - so haha. WWWTT Posted November 7, 2012 Report Posted November 7, 2012 Still, it remains a puzzle as to why more Canadians emigrate to the United States than do Americans to Canada, and the U.S. has TEN TIMES the population. Freer....better....but not able to keep the best and the brightest at home. Explain this please..... Because Canadians are more free to leave the country! First off,you can not enter Canada if you are a criminal. The US has Canada beat there hands down! In my experience people whom have a higher level of education tend to leave their country more easily. I am sure with a little more thought I can come up with a couple more? I hope that helps.
