Black Dog
For the record, I agree with the vein that your post comes from, but not its tone or aggression. Let's consider for a minute though that Mr. Canada doesn't necessarily mean ultra-nationalistic Nazi-like things, but something more benign. Let's say by nationalism he means having a sense of commitment and loyalty to your country (and community) and taking pride in the nation that we've built together. Perhaps a lot of that is dying today and maybe there's something to be said for that kind of loyalty to each other and our collective welfare. Let's think about it that way for a minute. That's not what he means, though. Quote America...."the worlds largest, best-armed shopping mall."-Ivor Tossell
Black Dog
Peaceful pursuits is making us the laughing stock of the world and got us booted from the UN security groups. What the world respects is military power. Sorry to burst your bubble but it's true. The stronger your military is the more respect you get. Yeah! Look at North Korea. Fourth largest army in the world. $6 billion USD annual military expenditures. Nuclear weapons. And nobody ever makes fun of them! cybercoma
That's not what he means, though. It comes from the same place though. Some people would reject the idea that we should have loyalty to our country. However, the country is nothing if not the people that make it up, so really it's having a sense of loyalty to each other. I think perhaps this is where some of the more "racist" and seemingly "bigoted" posts might come from. If a Muslim person comes to Canada, then they should be loyal to other Canadians (our nation), rather than maintaining an allegiance to their home country or even Islam. This is exactly the same issue immigrants have had for generations. Italians and Irish immigrants to America could be seen as maintaining still being "Irish" or "italian" rather than becoming American and in many cases the Anglo-Saxon Americans would not allow them to integrate, instead treating them as outsiders and forcing them to stay in their own cultural ghettoes or enclaves. Centuries ago people worried about Roman Catholics not having allegiance to the social hierarchy, but only having allegiance to the Church. The same fears have been said about Jews for all of history. What needs considering is whether a person can be a hyphenated citizen. Can they be loyal to the nation, but still have some sense of identity with their own culture? This is the keystone to multiculturalism. Those against it believe people have to completely reject their culture and heritage to show their full loyalty to the nation, while others believe that you can have your own cultural identity and still be fiercely loyal to your country. There are no answers here. These are just things worth reflecting upon. Mr.Canada
You should get your wife to post here. She's read over my shoulder a few times when I'm posting and says what I'm saying is ridiculous much of the time. She doesn't like politics as much as I do, she says I'm obsessed with it...lol. She has her beliefs which are to the left of mine slightly, she's more of a true PC/Red Tory type Fiscal conservative-social Liberal. She also says that sometimes I seem to have good points but I let emotion of my posts get in the way. I think you generally mean well, but you get so carried away sometimes that I have to just stop reading your posts. It would be interesting to see what she thinks, but I get that these sorts of forums aren't for everyone. cybercoma
Exactly, but there have always been these concerns that certain groups, and the groups always change over time, would be less loyal. Sleipnir
Mr. Canada's post that you quoted is not particularly close to a description of the US, so your response doesn't make much sense. Mr.Canada
Massive marches down Yonge Street showing off our military might. Fighters and bombers fly overhead. New tanks and missiles in the procession while thousands of soldiers goose step down Yonge all look to the right in unison as they pass by our beloved leader to the tune of our national anthem. All the while our PM salutes the crowd and his military from his perch high atop the balcony as the crowd goes wild below. That would be cool. Mr.Canada
You can always move to North Korea. They still do that kind of stuff there I think? WWWTT No, Canada is situated better. We could easily convince a tropical Caribbean nation to become a Canadian province. We can then install a governor there to run things while building a big military base.
