Catholic Schools seem superior to Public

Mr.Canada

Recommended Posts

Of the top 29 schools in Ontario — based on a fancy formula that screens out family factors that give some schools an edge — 17, or nearly two-thirds, are Catholic even though the public system is twice as large. Source

It's obvious that the Catholic system is doing something right yet so many people who hate or want to disbanded the Catholic system refuse to admit that much.

Instead of bashing the Catholic system the Public system could learn a thing or two from the Catholic School boards. It's obvious they are superior.

How do you figure? The academic curriculum is the same. Many of the teachers can move across both boards seeking employment.

My recollection of the one year that I attended catholic school (grade 8) was that the quality of supplies and equipment were inferior, and the teachers yelled at the students a lot more.

That is true. The catholic schools are vastly inferior. i know this for a fact. Mr. canada doesn't know much, he just tries to stir the pot.

My cousin attented attended a Catholic elementary school and highschool and said it was great. I also attended a Cahtolic elementary school and highschool. There are a lot of non-Catholic parents that try to switch their children from public to Catholic school, because it's a much better environment.

How is it a better environment? If you are not educated in a public school, you are not properly educated.

I guess you'd have to ask parents why they think it's a better environment. But they do. There are many non-Catholic parents that choose to send their kids to Catholic schools. Some parents also like the school uniforms, in that, there's no difference in what the kids wear, no matter if they're well off, or not as well off. They're treated equally. Hey, isn't that something you should like too?

Uniforms don't let learners promote their individualism. the way you dress is a way for many young learners to express themselves, just like the visual arts are important, even more important than math, because they promote creative thinking.

"Education professor Ben Levin, of the University of Toronto...noted that Catholic schools may be more selective about which students they keep."

This is my guess based on anecodotal evidence. A close relative of mine has a child with a learning disability. When that was discovered the catholic school board recommended the child be switched to the public school board as they claimed that they did not have the resources to deal with it. My relative said to them that they received the same funding per student as the public school board and therefore should be providing the same services. And was again directed to the public school board.

I should also say that I believe that the Catholic School Boards get more funding per student than the public school boards. Is that true? Beats me, but according to this site for 2006/07 Public School boards in Ontario received $8264 per student. Doing the calculation from the numbers for school fundings for all boards I calculate $8637 per student at the Catholic boards. For a difference of $373 per student. I hope that I am wrong about that, so if anyone can provide better numbers, please do.

Students are allowed to promote their creativity and individualism in the work they do.

Mr. Canada is winning this debate by a mile because he's the only person in this topic who has brought in some relevant statistic with a link. Socialist will go on about how the public system is better, but he has nothing but opinion to back that up, zero facts, zero hard evidence. Where's the stats?

How do you argue against this evidence from the OP link?:

Of the top 29 schools in Ontario...17, or nearly two-thirds, are Catholic even though the public system is twice as large.

Across the GTA, nine of the 20 top-scoring schools are Catholic, according to Ontario’s Best Public Schools, produced by the think tank every three years.

Almost everything else in this thread has been " i think/he said/she said" anecdotal evidence. I'll add to this: I can confirm Shady's observation that I've also known people who have put their kids in the Catholic system because it has "a better environment", but that doesn't mean the Catholic educational curriculum is necessarily superior. I've heard that, at least in the city I grew up, Catholic schools can be a safer environment for kids, at least partly because there is often less of a mix of culture/religion/race amongst the students that can be divisive. ie: You won't get a Jew and a Palestinian fighting in the schoolyard at a Catholic school LOL. I'd like to see some stats on this.

I don't accept "I've also known" arguments". Post some facts based on actual educational research or don't bother posting,

Thanks, to be honest I wasn't totally sure. But it is a little true...

I don't doubt it. But that wasn't my experience. I guess it just shows to go ya, never know. Until you do know, that is.

The school I attended was run by an old Priest, he was the principal and there were always a few Nuns there walking around. What they did, I do not know. They patrolled the yard during recess, and were known to be mean, nasty old bags.

The teachers were verbally abusive to the students. They shouted, freaked out, threw things. One guy grabbed my friend by the back of the neck. I had never seen anything like this in the classroom during my 7-8 years of public school prior to that. But it seemed acceptable there.

Might I add, many of the students were complete assholes, boozers and even drug addicts. Also my first exposure to that culture.

Oh and, edited to add, went back to my public high school the next year, and "POOF", that problem was gone.

Uhm that was the whole point of my post. Again, where's your stat evidence to refute the first post? Why do you say public schools are better? In Ontario, apparently they aren't.

i've heard hundreds of stories similar to yours. public schools have saved thousands of learners.
