Was he supposed to name Liberals and NDP? The_Squid Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 He was supposed to reform it like he said he would. Instead he broke his word, like the Liberals always did. Exactly.... Harper rolled over really easy on this issue, probably due to the fact that he would lose power if he actually did what he committed to do. It would have been difficult, but he took the easy way... It says a lot about the man's character and convictions, none of which is flattering. Quote

Did you seriously expect him to commit political suicide? PIK Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 Well, to paraphrase Machiavelli, if he had done what you suggest he would not be in power now. Did you seriously expect him to commit political suicide? I love it how the rules change for cons. He could not get reform so he will do what everyone ese did legallY. Man I can't get over how the left cries foul at everything. You lost the election, get over it. We patiently waited for our turn to toss the liebrals, now it is time for you to do the same. The_Squid Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 Well, to paraphrase Machiavelli, if he had done what you suggest he would not be in power now. Did you seriously expect him to commit political suicide? No, I expected him to keep his word and stand up for what he believes in. My mistake. He has no integrity and no scruples. Quote
Wild Bill Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 No, I expected him to keep his word and stand up for what he believes in. My mistake. He has no integrity and no scruples. That's what i thought. You would want him to maintain his integrity and get shuffled out of office, giving your guy a chance. You really should read Machiavelli. He points out that the first duty of the Prince is to maintain power, for otherwise he can do nothing. When Harper made his Senate pledge he might have been sincere, you know! Perhaps it was later when he became Prime Minister that he found he couldn't make it happen. One can be sincere but wrong. Is that a sin? Besides, if you are saying that he truly made Senate Reform such a big deal then you must also admit that it is a pretty popular idea, since he got voted in! By any chance, does this mean you agreed with him about the Senate? Perhaps you have some thoughts to share as to how reform could be practically accomplished, without just getting booted out of office, to be the useless Opposition Party. TheNewTeddy Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 I voted for Harper and the CPC in 2006 because I wanted Senate Reform I'm still waiting. Don't get me wrong, if and when Harper does reform the Senate I will be truly happy, but I'm not happy having to wait for so long. Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. The_Squid Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) That's what i thought. You would want him to maintain his integrity and get shuffled out of office, giving your guy a chance. You really should read Machiavelli. He points out that the first duty of the Prince is to maintain power, for otherwise he can do nothing. Harper is royalty now? It is all about holding on to power at all costs? I think you are correct to say his main goal is to hold on to power... damn what's good for the country.... When Harper made his Senate pledge he might have been sincere, you know! Perhaps it was later when he became Prime Minister that he found he couldn't make it happen. One can be sincere but wrong. Is that a sin? No, but not having the integrity to come out and say so is gutless. It makes one look like a political opportunist who will say anything to get elected but will not follow through. Besides, if you are saying that he truly made Senate Reform such a big deal then you must also admit that it is a pretty popular idea, since he got voted in! By any chance, does this mean you agreed with him about the Senate? He was voted in by 2% more of the popular vote than the previous election. 39.6% of the popular vote. Yes, I did agree with him and his party about senate reform. Not surprising that they backed down without a fight. Like you said, hold on to power is his goal... Perhaps you have some thoughts to share as to how reform could be practically accomplished, without just getting booted out of office, to be the useless Opposition Party. Harper is the supposed expert.... he should know how to reform it since he was the proponent. Edited September 7, 2012 by The_Squid Quote

socialist Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 Reform is dead. so what if harper appointed 5 new senators. some of you people worry about the dumbest things. Quote Thankful to have become a free thinker.
WWWTT Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 Man this thread is freekin funny. More proof of how Harper isn't too keen on thinking. When he was going after the senate when he was in opposition, did he not realize he would be eating crow if he ever got into power? Now here he is,appointing conservative after conservative to do his bidding. Here's a novel idea, vote for someone who thinks! Or better yet, think when you vote! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! That reminds me, never ask Greg to be a business partner! NEVER!
cybercoma Posted September 7, 2012 Report Posted September 7, 2012 so what if harper appointed 5 new senators. some of you people worry about the dumbest things. Nobody's worried about him appointing 5 more senators. It's just that every time he does so it's a reminder that he's not even remotely concerned with working towards reforming the senate. Quote
Topaz Posted September 7, 2012 Author Report Posted September 7, 2012 I don't understand, Topaz. Was he supposed to name Liberals and NDP? Fill the vacancies with Opposition guys, like the Liberals always did? What's wrong with appointing someone that is NOT from your party? Paul Martin did, a NDP woman. Many years now, politics seems more like a war, rather what is good for the country and its people, parties like the Tories, are out to destroy the political system and rules which Canada has lived by. Welcome to the tribal mentality of the far right. These are people who view everything as "us versus them" type situation. If they were to appoint someone from another party that would be conceding that said party is in some way legitimate. All in all this is just another example of how the right has no real principles. Whats bad is bad only when someone they don't like does it. So therefore you must believe that Chretien's Liberals were far right? After all, Chretien stacked the Senate with Liberals, only tossing in someone from the other parties once in a while, when the numbers were such that the gesture was only a token. With a clear and strong majority, it was totally safe to throw in the odd Opposition Senator. I never thought of Chretien as "far right". Who would have thought? Thanks! I learned something new! g_bambino Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 At least the people harper puts in are for senate reform and it will be reformed. (And there is no real attempt at serious Senate reform, anyway.) He will try ,which is more then anyone else ever did. This is the 1st time canada actually had a real leader in many years. But the attacks by the big red machine and the media ever since harper came on the scene, have unfairly warped some people's thinking of him. Say it enough and people will believe, that is why so many on the left believe fullhe is satan's son or the next hitler. And there is absolutly no evidence of either, just dumb hatefull people spouting off. Quote Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.
g_bambino Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 He will try... Try what? Lessening the length of time a Senator can serve is all he's really tried to do. Though, the word "tried" is used very loosely, since there's been little action on the bill or force behind it in the Commons, so far. Quote
