Boges Posted June 11, 2013 Report Posted June 11, 2013 (edited) MACs are Personal Computers as well. I can't use a tablet, touchscreen for the stuff I do. For purely professional purposes, you can't beat a desktop computer. But most people are doing their basic web browsing and social networking on a mobile device. I personally don't get the tablet craze. You have a device you can take anywhere with you in your pocket that's as powerful as a tablet, plus it can make phone calls. I just use my 4.5" phone to do much of my mobile computing. I can't justify the purchase of a tablet. I said in the Windows 8 hating thread that I feel no need to upgrade my PC. There are few things I need the PC for. Then again I'm on a desktop computer all day at work. (a Mac ) Edited June 11, 2013 by Boges Quote

Boges Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) What a set of blithering hypocrites the people at Apple are. http://bgr.com/2014/06/30/iphone-6-rumors-design-photos/ Without question, Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6 launches are the most hotly anticipated smartphone launches of the year. According to reports from numerous solid sources, Apple plans to launch not one but two completely redesigned iPhone models in 2014. One new iPhone 6 is said to feature a 4.7-inch display alongside a new design and upgraded internals, and the second new iPhone model is said to be a phablet with a 5.5-inch screen. The look and feel of these two new phones will seemingly be quite similar despite the size difference, according to various leaks. Unfortunately, we have also seen several leaked mockups that suggest the two new iPhone models will have something else in common: A design element on the back of the phones that completely ruins their look. First they backed down on an iPad less than 10" now they're rumoured to have a Phablet coming down the line? They'll also increase the size to 4.7, so basically the size of the Galaxy S3. I remember hearing Apple fans saying all the features their phones were, bereft of features Android had, were un-needed. 4 plus inch screen is too big! Just about every single missing feature has now, or soon will be, introduced. Live Widgets, LTE, Settings Toggle, Large Screen etc etc. The only thing missing is NFC. They're big new thing is the "iWatch" something that many manufacturers have come out with a version with for years now. They have the gall to sue over a rectangular touch screen and apps arranged in a grid fashion, yet they pretty much haven't had an ounce of innovation since Jobs died. Watch, soon they'll come out with customizable launchers and keyboards like the adults that use normal phones can use. Edited July 2, 2014 by Boges Quote
Mighty AC Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 Wow, their devices will be almost as useful as Android counterparts. Fortunately, they'll still charge more. Boges Posted July 2, 2014 Report Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) Wow, their devices will be almost as useful as Android counterparts. Fortunately, they'll still charge more. The irony is many Android phones now cost more than the iPhone. Buying an unlocked Galaxy S5 will cost you upwards of $800. It's good that Google offers an unlocked Nexus 5 to anyone for $400. A phone that is easily comparable to the iPhone 5S if not better. Apple even conceded on that point by releasing the iPhone 5C last year. An iPhone that looks like it has Crocs on it. Everything Apple said made them unique is slowly being chipped away at. The only thing they hold with a tight grip is their closed garden OS which is the #1 reason why I'll never buy an iProduct. I mentioned in the Wireless Code of Conduct thread, that anyone looking to get a "free phone" from their wireless carrier will be in for a rude awakening. Rogers, Bell and Telus will all force you into a new plan that'll be easily $20 more a month than you're paying now if you want them to give you a subsidized phone. The reason being that they can only offer 2 year contracts now. I predict the Nexus 5 from Google will soon become the most popular phone in Canada once people's contracts start expiring. Assuming we're full of saavy consumers, which we likely aren't. Edited July 2, 2014 by Boges Quote
The_Squid Posted July 3, 2014 Report Posted July 3, 2014 (edited) Why do people need this shit? Yes, it's a bit hypocritical as I type on my iPad. But seriously... A new phone every year? Cuz it's slightly different? It's an extremely wasteful industry fuelled by a wasteful public. More like every 2 years. Think about what your smartphone/cell phone is though. 4 things I usually need on my person in public or I'll go into full panic attack: Wallet, Keys, Wedding Ring and Phone. Only one of those things is a piece of technology. It's with you every day in your pocket you're using it often. Wear and Tear is going to take its toll on a portable piece of tech. All tech companies are going to offer a new feature every year, it's how they make money. Would you rather pay $2,000 for a phone that lasts 5 years? What a smartphone can do has sort of plateaued a bit. You can buy last year's model and it won't be obsolete for a few years. Quote
GostHacked Posted July 3, 2014 Report Posted July 3, 2014 I wonder how you all got through life without a cell phone on you all the time. Many times I end up leaving the cell at home. Those that MUST HAVE AND NEED have developed a dependance on it. Like a drug. Take that away and many go into withdrawal and have no idea what to do with their hands. My HTC Desire is about a year old and was kind of outdated then. But since I don't have a dataplan, my use of the phone is nicely limited to phone calls and text messages. The Squids' message is also quite true, Advertising works on the masses to hype them up to get the new product when the one they have does everything they currently need. It's wasteful. Phones have become disposable, bad for the environment, are they being recycled properly? Quote

Phones have become disposable, bad for the environment, are they being recycled properly? How did people get by without running water? refrigerated food? mechanical transportation? The ability to be connected is a nice frill and for some it's a necessity. I've said this in another thread but texting and voice calls are quickly going out of style. People communicate with free web-based messaging apps more and more these days. I've never actually thrown away a phone. I'm paranoid about the information on the phone I just keep old phones in a cupboard. Kind of a relic of the past. Quote
Bryan Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Smart phones are a very valuable addition to the tech that allows me to do my job. Sure, there was a time when this technology was not necessary. The technology that I use to do my job didn't then either. The fact that I'm able to work with anyone anywhere at any time, and to send my work to anyone anywhere at any time, means I also need to be reachable.... ANYwhere ANY time. That I can use that tech to keep in touch with others, and use it for a long list of other time saving uses makes the job and the rest of life that much better. My smartphone allows me to get 16-18 hrs worth of stuff done while allowing me to spend less than 6 hrs a day chained to a desk. • No need to put off or cancel family vacations when I'm in the middle of a project -- I can just take the work with me. • No need to fly across the country for "emergencies", I can just send in what I've got instantly. • Never need to miss my kids stuff due to work. • I can multitask appointments. I can read/send emails while standing in line, pay bills and do my banking while watching my daughter's recital, shop for and buy that thing she needs for the next one before we've even left the lobby, etc, etc. Quote

Boges Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 No such thing as overpriced if millions are sold each year. It is when you can get products that are faster and have more features for less. Apple likes to think you're paying more for quality, when you're often just paying for a logo of an Apple. Quote
cybercoma Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 It is when you can get products that are faster and have more features for less. There must be some reason people keep buying that makes them worth that price to them. Technical specs alone don't account for the stability of the devices, ease of use, and other things that may add intangible value to the products. They're not overpriced if they're still selling a crapload of them. still making a large profit, and still hold a huge chunk of the market. Quote

Understanding this when others don't is why Apple is eating everyone else's lunch. A company selling a list of specs as their rationale for buying their products does not understand the product category. These are devices that you interact with in every facet of life, it's how they work and how they work together that makes the difference. Quote
