cybercoma Posted June 5, 2012 Report Posted June 5, 2012 So if I call a Black man an idiot, you think I'm doing that because he's black, right, not because he's an idiot... How's calling A black man an idiot the same thing as calling ALL natives savages? Quote
Fletch 27 Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 BBC sais Harper could not accept a knighthood on grounds that were not published or commented on... Can anyone substantiate this? Would he accommodate this later? What's the scoop here!? Quote
bleeding heart Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 So if I call a Black man an idiot, you think I'm doing that because he's black, right, not because he's an idiot... No...let's stick to the formulation as it exists, rather than your backpedaled one which conveniently revises your theme: If you called all black men idiots, yes, I would think you were doing that because they're black. Who wouldn't? Quote “There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver." --Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007
g_bambino Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 I doubt that Harper would ever stick his neck out that far for something as trivial as a knighthood! Yes, I know. I was merely kidding around. Quote
PIK Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 Our history? Our history is in 1914 WE Canada entered WW1 as just another common wealth country supporting the King. We found our selves as a country in that war OUR PARLIAMENT (which happened to be one of the only times we had a coalition of all federal parties working together under one united government) passed the Nickel Resolution. Our Parliament and its leaders said it is time for Canada to strike out on our own. We punched way above our weight in that War came out of it as a stronger country one that wanted to be something different something better to move away from the crown. We then went on to create our own form of knighthood called the order of Canada. That is our History. We aren't British we are Canadian. Get over it already. The idea we don't need knighthoods Canadians don't need knighthoods is our history. Better go read up on it. No PM has been knighted from WW1 onward for a very import reason. It defined us as an independent nation and our leaders as people who have allegiances to Canadians. That is what the Nickel resolution is about. It isn't something to spat on it is something to be celebrated. I am starting to get tired of people repeating talking with out anything to back it up. You speak in slogans while I speak in facts. It is a sad state of affairs we have dropped this far in our public discourse. LOL You have no idea, do you? You my friend are the one in need of alot of reading on the making of this country. g_bambino Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 (edited) OUR PARLIAMENT... passed the Nickel Resolution. Our Parliament and its leaders said it is time for Canada to strike out on our own. The idea we don't need knighthoods Canadians don't need knighthoods is our history. Better go read up on it. No PM has been knighted from WW1 onward for a very import reason. It defined us as an independent nation... The Nickel Resolutions (there were two, in 1917 and 1919) had nothing to do with independence and everything to do with class warfare and corruption; the first Nickel Resolution was based on the notion that hereditary titles were "undemocratic" while the second targeted all titular honours and was inspired by a scandal about the selling of such honours by the British prime minister. What somewhat related to independence was changes to the process by which honours were granted to Canadians that were implemented around the time of, but separate to, the first Nickle Resolution, which came after the Canadian government grew tired of having to go through three steps to see a Canadian of its choosing honoured - the governor general, the foreign and colonial secretary, and the British prime minister - and seeing Canadians honoured by any of those three aforementioned figures without telling the Canadian government. Seemingly forgotten is the fact that the granting of titular honours to Canadians - knighthoods, mostly - resumed when Bennett was prime minister (who himself was made Viscount Bennett of Mickleham in the County of Surrey and of Calgary and Hopewell in the Dominion of Canada). This prompted MP Humphrey Mitchell to put to the House a resolution almost the same as the Nickle Resolution. It was defeated, 113 to 94. Still, after Bennett, the Canadian government stopped recommending Canadians for honours that confer a title. In essence, the resolutions are meaningless (resolutions are never binding); it's merely what policy the government chooses to practice. [ed.: c/e] Edited June 6, 2012 by g_bambino Quote
Argus Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 How's calling A black man an idiot the same thing as calling ALL natives savages? Simple. It's not based on race if on the basis of the evidence, a reasonable person could say they actually WERE savages. Quote "A liberal is someone who claims to be open to all points of view — and then is surprised and offended to find there are other points of view.” William F Buckley
BubberMiley Posted June 6, 2012 Report Posted June 6, 2012 Simple. It's not based on race if on the basis of the evidence, a reasonable person could say they actually WERE savages. The "reasonable" part is questionable. Quote "I think it's fun watching the waldick get all excited/knickers in a knot over something." -scribblet
