Harris Conservatives Government Legacy

Recommended Posts

Toll-highway dispute goes international

The highway was sold to the consortium by the previous Conservative government on the eve of the 1999 provincial election.

This is another example of the fallacy of the advantages of privatizing. This sale by the Harris government is turning into a nightmare for the citizens of Ontario.

Canadians had better wake up and realize it is not in our interests to keep on electing these right wing governments.

Conservatives aren't bad, they have been in governemnt for 50 years. From 1943-1985, then 1995-2003. And there were good times under conservatives. Look what Bob Rae did to Ontario. He doubled the province debt in 4 years. He had 10 million deficits. He raised welfare rates, so people on welfare would make more than epeople on a minimum wage job. Plus, he was a dork.

The business community shares a large part of the blame for those Ontario deficits.

And to suggest that welfare reciprients are paid more than minimum wage workers is just not true.

But to sort out a lot of these chronic problems we need a guaranteed annual income plan. Workers obviously need to be paid a lot more than that of course. ;)

Maple S.

Under the Ontario Progressive Conservative watch, personal taxes decreased, service fees were watchdog alert, seniors were recognized, welfare frauds were reduced, employment levels rose, small business strengthened, and it was a conservative goal to make living in this province of Ontario, affordable, was nearing record success.

In the Harris progress effort, and to a lesser degree Eves, ONTARIO , became a viable province of opportunity. Those who chose to abuse the system of social assistance were defeated soundly. They who attempted every sound effort of support to conserve dwindling energy resourses made significant gains. A strong Ontario Conservative government kept its' promises to Ontarians. !!!!!

Please say a few words in confidence about these positives !!

So you blame the NDP doubling the deficit? What would you expect a government to do during a recession? Lay more people off?

So you give Harris credit for creating 750,000 new jobs. Are you sure that was his own doing and nothing to do with the US economy under Clinton?

So you oppose the NDP's increasing of welfare to levels above minimum wage. Are you proposing to increase minimum wage as well? I thought right-wingers were opposed to increasing the minumum wage.

Bob Rae was highly educated. Who said nurses can go the way of the hula-hoop?

During the same time BC became a have not province. Thank you NDP for killing the economy during one of the biggest booms of the last 100 years.

Governments can a times be powerless to fix the economy but they sure can kill it.

And certainly the Ontario Conservatives did kill the infrastructures of the municipalities. Now the Socred/Liberals and Conservative/Liberals are trying the same thing in BC and Quebec.

Our BC economy was hurt by the USA trade actions. Lumber is one of our most important exports.

Lumber prices were highest in 1994.

The softwood tariffs didn't start until 2001. The damage was done along time ago.

Since the BCLiberals took over, we had the emergence of softwood trade tariffs, BSE, SARS, 911 aftermath, and the worst fire seasons in a long time.

And yes the economy still turned around.

As for municipal infrastructure look to Ottawa and ask when if ever they will follow through on a promise to pay for something. The last I heard the GST rebates have now been pushed to next year maybe. Hey if they wait long enough they can announce it again, and get another round of political payoff. Kind of like the 2B for health care last year, 8 announcements and no money.

Daniel,

Bob Rae could have cut back, instead of spending Ontario into the ground. Its easier to keep yourself out of a hole than try to dig yourself out of one.

Even on election night of the NDP win, everyone knew the NDP was going to spend their way out of the recession. So at the end of their term (love'em or hate'em) there wasn't any big surprise.

Compare that to the end of the Harris government when - surprise, surprise - big deficit, infrastructure chaos, poisoned water, hospital lineups, constant labour unrest, underfunded schools etc, etc. and the porkbellying and corporate welfare keeps on truckin'.

Latest news on the Socred/Liberal front: Canada's Galapogos (Queen Charlotte Islands) will be open for oil drilling again. Got to keep the economy running, eh?

Plus, we shouldn't tax coporations that much becuase they are the ones who create the jobs.

LMAO!!!!!

This is why Conservatives arn't very good economists.

The line that you advocate is called 'rent-seeking', and it's something that Tories always try to do, while all the time denying that they're doing it. It's the typical tripe we're all used to seeing.

I don't have the time to teach you Econ 367, but look into the term 'rent seeking'.

Harris got rid of the big defecit, left by Bob Rae, in the year 2000. Plus, we shouldn't tax coporations that much becuase they are the ones who create the jobs.

You want to know what else Harris inherited from Bob Rae? A growing economy. It's also been reported that during the final year of NDP, Ontario had the highest economic growth of any G7 region.

Take a guess what the Common Sense Revolution left behind.

Because corporations create jobs, should they be:

exempt from Labour legislation?

exempt from the Human Rights Code?

exempt from environmental regulations?

exempt from the criminal code?

exempt from local legislation of sovereign governments?

Harris saved the province. He did the right thing with testing teachers. The lefty teachers want big salaries and no government to see if they are doing a good job. Most of the new education money always goes to salaries.
