The use of the word "bigot"

Recommended Posts

I don't know you that well, so I wouldn't be able to hold a grudge.

I don't remember reporting you. Reports are anonymous so I don't know how you'd know.

This isn't the point of the thread so let's move on.

You told me to stop the insults in the thread and then not long after i got a msg from charles anthony

I put two and two together

There is a clear difference telling somone to go to hell and telling someone they could go to hell

Don't ban me bro. Oh behave, I'll behave. I'll be a good little boy.

I think others complain about you too.

Ok. Thanks for explaining.

So unless i kiss everyones ass I am a racist or bigot?

you have issues man

It's not about kissing everyone's ass. It's about not being offensive and disrespectful to entire groups of people.

Are you upset with my comments towards religious zealots (christians, muslims), the truth about Canadas aboriginals?

transgendered people?

Michael one more private message telling me what to do and I will report you for harrasment

You obviously have a problem with authority. You've admitted as much yourself. So maybe you need to just take a step back and consider what you're saying in that context.

MH was elected by the members of this forum to be the facilitator because of his even-handed and balanced approach to posting on these forums. As a facilitator it is his responsibility to inform posters when they are breaking the rules on the forum, in order to keep discussions on track, as well as educating people that may be unaware of the rules. He does not edit, delete, or change posts in any way and he has no control over who is banned. Those responsibilities belong to Charles Anthony and, although he doesn't appear to be very involved these days, Greg. So if Michael messages you, it's to inform you that you may be breaking forum rules, not to harass you. I would think that most people would be thankful to know this before a moderator gets involved. However, as I said, you have a problem with authority, so you can't take it for what it is.

I would strongly recommend taking a step back and re-evaluating the situation within the context of your own personal idiosyncracies. Otherwise, you're just going to continue getting pissed off over stupid inconsequential things, like being told you're breaking the rules on an internet forum. There's better things to get worked up about.

Cyber you'd be a phony of a person if you were personally okay with every group of people

I'm able to distinguish between groups and individuals. When you make comments that all individuals in a group hold some sort of characteristic of the group as a whole, you're commiting an ecological fallacy. When you do it in an insulting and offensive way, you deserve to be called out on it.

I have no power here. I have influence, just as others do, but not power.

Now can we please stop discussing moderation? There really isn't much point to it. Complain to the mods if you want a change in policy, or to remove me.

I wouldn't have a problem with Michael if he treated everyone the same

but he doesnt and I've seen it

You are probably the only poster on the forum that thinks that. This is what I mean.

that also goes for ppl who call people bigot and or racist

that breaks the sites rules but is let go by the crooked moderating

The website is private property, and if the owner desires "crooked moderating" - and if he did not he would step in to change it - then he desires it.

This is Greg's forum and if you don't care for how Greg wants to run his forum, find another.

Can we move on from discussing moderation now please ?

It's not just about moderation. I think the central quetion is, is calling someone bigot a pejorative.

Now some have said not really, not if they really ARE bigoted. But then by that logic one can also call someone stupid, if the really ARE stupid.

You're right, Manny.

The question on this thread is whether 'bigot' is an insult or not.

Stupid is a relative term, though... and ultimately not measurable. Bigots, racists represent a certain point of view, and we even have a poster defending that point of view on here now.

Well, if calling a head of state an "idiot" is OK here, certainly it's fine to point out a bigot or two.

You made the point earlier and I think it bears repeating, that there's an important difference between calling a comment bigoted and calling a person a bigot.

The latter is namecalling.

Namecalling does occur on mlw, but doesn't seem excessive to me.

It's a good distinction for all of us to remember.

Rapists, pedophiles, and nazis post online too.

its excessive, its just that you don't seem to care if a few certain people are the targets

people with power often abuse their power

that is why I have a problem with authority

Michael just the other day suggested to me that I was being too insulting.

I don't feel harassed.

"What a stupid comment you made." seems equally insulting to directly calling someone "stupid". I think if you're going to insult someone at least have the guts to say it plainly, not by this evasive, cowardly cop-out.
