It's a beauty contest..for women, not shemales

Exactly. And for the possible winner and representative of Miss Universe to have been born a male, defeats the whole purpose of the contest for Miss Universe. You know, the whole Miss part.

Like I said, it fundamentally changes the premise and purpose of said pageant. That being said, I really couldn't care less about these types of competitions.

Not necessarily, no. Some of them seem flat out ridiculous.

I agree. But wouldn't that conclude that there is no "bigotry" towards transgenders since they aren't the only ones facing unfair discrimination? It's not a matter of bigotry, but rather a very specific type of person that they are looking for. So not all discrimination = bigotry. There are some events where contestants must meet very specific qualifications.

My point is, I have no problem with a transgender competing, but do I find that discrimination any more troublesome than the other discriminatory qualifications? I honestly don't know. But then, I have no use for such pageants myself as I acknowledge that there are a lot of things other people like/participate in/enjoy that I personally have no use for.

My main argument with your view is that you claim everyone who doesn't think transgenders should be able to compete in this pageant is a "bigot," and I just don't see it that way. I may not agree with their opinion, but then I'm not a "target member" of the audience such an event is appealing to, either.

As a side point, there is a Miss Black USA, but can you imagine if there were a "Miss White USA?" Yet there are no public objections to "Miss Black USA" that I'm aware of, and I doubt if the people running the pageant are bigots.

So if the organizers felt the audience would be uncomfortable with, say, black contestants, you'd be okay with discriminating against them too?
How many black contestants have negroid features: flat nose, short curly hair, thick lips? Looks like being black contestant on that show means you have to look like a white woman in every way except skin colour. You ok with that? Edited by TimG

Perhaps they feel that having surgically and hormonally created females from males takes away from the integrity of the pageant.

You might have a point if they didn't allow every kind of cosmetic surgery under the sun. Well, except for a sex-change. That's one surgery too far. Edited by cybercoma

No. Just business. The Miss Universe Pagent is business that makes money off the sexual desirability of the contentants. Allowing transgender people would undermine that desirability because of the 'yuck' factor that the transgender process induces in the hetrosexual males that are an audiance for such things. You could argue that the the audiance is being unreasonable but we are talking about entertainment here: why should anyone expect anyone else to leave their comfort zone when they are looking for entertainment?

Because they're transgendered and not naturally female. That's a fundamental change in the nature of the contest. How can you not see that?

Nothing about those contestants is natural. Do you have any idea the amount of work that goes into those women, both surgically and cosmetically? Give me a break.

So if they disallowed any sugery for the naturally born women as well, you'd cease your opposition? Anyways, it's true that women can have cosmetic surgery, but that surgery is based on the same female born composition. Where a transgendered individual brings biological differences that female born individuals do not.

The "female-born composition," eh? Does that include the intersexed?

See my comment above:

Seems to me the show is already discriminating against women based on their racial characteristics and no one noticed. Edited by TimG

I didn't post anything about muscle mass, I posted about the inherent advantages to having been male originally, and possessing a lower body fat percentage and not having to deal with any of the side effects of menstruation.

I'm sure having a six-pack and striated muscle-fibre definition would be a real advantage in a beauty pageant. [/sarcasm]

Tim, black women are allowed to compete, they just don't win because beauty pageants are ridiculous. They reinforce a constructed beauty ideal, which doesn't include the black body. The objections to the transgendered woman is that she meets the beauty ideal, but if anyone found out it would hurt their tender sensibilities that she's able to meet that ideal although born male.

A "constructed beauty ideal" which attacts a paying audiance. You obviously disagree with the entire concept so your opinion on what is and is not part of this "constructed beauty ideal" is rather immaterial. If they say it does not include transgender and black people then that is their choice.

In any case, do you think a woman who works in porno flicks would be allowed to compete? I am sure there are many other questions related to a woman's background that make her ineligible. I don't see why asking if someone was born a women would an unreasonable requirement given the many other arbitrary requirements that only exist to promote the contest to the minority of people that are interested in such things.

Oh yes, here's comes Dur Perfesser to give us what's what.

C'mon Shady, we're waiting.

Careful...Don't call him that...

I'm told from others with more clout than I that he doesn't like being called "The Professor"...Or in this case "Dur Perfesser"...

The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!

An interesting and fair point...

That's not true. I just don't think it should be a one-way street. I should be able to call you something as well, without being penalized. But that's not the case, is it.

As has been pointed out on the thread, this kind of sarcasm is indeed considered an insult.

It really should'nt be...It's kind of an ironic moniker...

I agree Jack, but it should work both ways. It shouldn't be a priviledge only you and your cohort get to exercise. But like I said, that's not the case. So if I can't do it, either should you.

Oh I forgot. Jack keeps me on ignore, but continues to talk trash about me. Very brave of him.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger
