eyeball Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 Really? I didn't feel better or worse when Canada indefinitely detained nationals using "Security Certificates" going back to 1979, long before anything Bush, Obama, or Osama! I hear you. bud Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 you guys need to face the truth: In the post-Cold War era, despite massive increases in education and access to information, Americans continued to lag behind citizens of other industrialized democracies on measures of international affairs information. In 1994, for example, an eight-nation survey found that citizens of Mexico, Spain, Italy, Canada, Germany, Britain and France were more able than Americans to provide correct answers to a series of questions tapping foreign affairs. Whereas 37 percent of the American sample was unable to answer a single question, the comparable level of ignorance (averaged) for Italy, France, Britain, Germany and Canada was 19 percent. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/05/AR2006070501144.html oh and lol @ the people commenting about 'not generalizing' when so many of their posts in regards to muslims drips with generalization and stereotyping. waldo Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 I'd feel a lot better about Obama if he'd only shut down that POW camp in Guantanamo like he promised. lack of Congressional support... inability to find a state willing to host... fear of a security threat on American soil... lack of military support (vis-a-vis domestic judiciary vs. military tribunals)... possible 2012 election influence, etc., etc., etc. Quote
sharkman Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 Exactly. Obama didn't know what he was talking about when he made that promise because he had so little experience going in. Didn't he promise to try terrorists in the court system as well instead of a military tribunal? Hopefully he pays in the next election for misleading the citizenry with this and other promises. Quote

You mean a survey in which they compare the US with 8 other much smaller nations? I wonder why they left out China, Russia, poor nations and just about any nation in Africa? Hey, don't get me wrong, there certainly is a segment of the American population that isn't up to speed on international affairs, but so what? Interestingly enough, the article blames the MSM in the US for the lack of knowledge on international affairs. Edited January 3, 2012 by sharkman Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 ...Interestingly enough, the article blames the MSM in the US for the lack of knowledge on international affairs. American audiences get exactly what they want, not what other nationals think they should be interested in. Years ago, there were any number of high-brow television and radio programs for foreign and domestic "affairs", but none had the audience share draw of a Jerry Springer or sports. So we shouldn't blame the "MSM", because in the end, many Americans don't know, don't care, and don't care that they don't know, and would rather watch celebs on TMZ. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
