A Canadian family is asking the gov't to help get their daughter out of a Mexican jail, which she's been there since November with no charges against her. She being accused of trying to help Gaddafi's son escape to Mexico which she denys. True of False? Who really knows, but the fact that she also accused NATO of bombing libya and killing civilians won't help her, those are international laws which could get the five countries leader in a lot of hot water if they are true. Question, think Harper will back away from this one? http://ca.news.yahoo.com/family-canadian-held-mexico-urges-ottawa-help-090435531.html

It's certainly something the government needs to look hard into. Realistically, the whole thing stinks to high heaven and it APPEARS she's been involved with some shady dealings, or at least some shady people. I don't really have a lot of faith in the Mexican justice system, however, and I don't think she should be left to rot in a mexican prison while we find out either.

What a stupid statement.

The Mexican "justice system" is not to be trusted. Hopefully the gov't is working to get to the bottom of this.

Why? Because he has an opinion that you disagree with? Topaz askeed for comments and he gave one.

Since Mexico is not some middle eastern country in the middle of a war, I wouldn't say this girl should be abandoned due to her own stupidity. That being said, the Canadian government should limit it's involvement to ensuring she gets a fair trial by MEXICAN standards and in accordance with MEXICAN laws. She wasn't in Canada so Canadian laws don't apply. Don't like it? Don't leave Canada.

Why do you say that? Have you been there recently, or are you just parroting something you read somewhere?

I was in Mexico in October (Piedras Negras, near San Antonio). Nobody was looking for trouble. Very friendly. Their Aztec/Inca exhibit is pretty cool. It's not a tourist town though.

I think by now we all can see Mexico is one of the most corrupt lawless countries on this side of the world

police who work for the cartels cause their family was threatened take hostages all the time for ransom money

drug wars going on... people stay in their houses all day afraid to go out

people who speak out on it in social media get brutally murdered and then hung out

for media and people to see

We know this is going on yet we still go there so you get no sympathy from me

That's a pretty slim hope especially in light of the report she wrote that criticized NATO, that would include Canadian, bombing of Libyan civilians.

I'd trust our justice system even less than Mexico's in this case. Mexico's probably just following Ottawa's cue on this one.

Effing state governments...they're thick as thieves as often as not.

Drug gangs? Exactly wtf are you babbling about? Have you even got a clue of what's happening in this thread?

I suppose, but it should probably be awarded for going abroad and trusting our government would have the integrity to still go for bat for her despite the critical report she wrote about our countries involvement in Libya.

I certainly wouldn't put it past our government to be corrupt enough to tell Mexican authorities to let her rot as long as they please.

Except thats untrue.

There are laws on the books here that apply to Canadians outside of Canada.

Yes there are....here. There is not a thing that Canada can do to enforce it's laws in another soverign state. Mexico is an autonomous country, not a territory of Canada.

Mexican law trumps Canadian law.
