Three comments.

First, mayor Ford now wants to Provincial government to ignore Council's vote. Who do you think he is? He's the MAYOR of Toronto, not its absolute monarch.

Second, now that the Council has voted, let's start work. NOW. And get Council and the Mayor out of they way. Once work is started, their only involvement should be in monitoring that budgets and timelines are respected.

Third, there are plans for the expansion of both the subway and LRT networks in such second class cities as Paris and London. So much for LRT being a third-World transportation solution.

Stinz should run for mayor IMO. There are those firmly on the left who want good transit because it's part of their ideology of socialism; but Stinz wants good transit because she... you know, wants good transit!!! That's my kinda person. I voted for the runner up in the past two city elections, but I hope that if she runs, I'll be able to vote for the winner.

Looking ahead. What's the next project on the map after Eglinton, Fich and possibly Sheppard?

We need to divert ridership from the Yonge line. Right now, rush-hour trains are already full well before they get to Eglinton in the morning.

How to do this?

First: an express subway ine or a underground train (think Paris RER train here) underneath the current line, from Finch station with stops at Sheappard, Eglinton, (St. Clair?), Yonge, Wellesley (or College), and Union.

Second: A new express downtown line. Going from either Main, Victoria or Greenwood station, going down the rail corridor with a stop near Queen Street and Broadview, then direct to Union station or Queen and Osgoode stations or King and St. Adrew Stations (if going to Union, posible stops at the Distillery and St. Lawrence Market, which could be opened only outside of rush hour). At a later stage, the iine could be expended westward with stops at bathurst and Exhibition, then up the rail corridor toDundas West (possible stops at Queen and College) (alternate, west to Roncesvalles and north, with possible stops at Queen/Roncesvalles and Howard Park).

Third: Integration of all transist networks in the GTA, including GO Transit, with one smartcard payment system and zone fares. With increases in the frequency of GO trains. Link the Richmond Hill train line to the Sheppard Subway by relocating the Orile train staion next to the Leslie subway station (in my dreams, I also see a train station where the line crosses Eglinton, but a link between that and the Englinton LRT line above is not feasable, alas).

The time to start thinking and planning is now. Equipment and staff working on the York U extension will be available in 3 years from now.

Expensive? Most certainly. Needed? Even more (for one and two anyway, three is just musing).

Thoughts?

Paging through the Sun today is bringing out some great comic material.

Joe Warmington:

On Ford's long, dark subway ride of the soul following the vote.

The mayor had a great time. It was nice to be away from the snakes. Nice to be around people who work for a living and don’t have all the exquisite things in life handed to them.
-Joe Warmington clearly doesn't know Ford's personal background.

It’s not Mayor Rob Ford who lost the subway vote. He tried to fulfill the agenda he was elected on.

It’s the good people of Scarborough who lost. But even that’s too soft. They had an underground transit line stolen from them in The Great Train Robbery of 2012. And the rest of the city too because with this leftist coup against the mayor, will come streetcars, streetcars and more streetcars.

-Joe Warmington clearly doesn't know the difference between streetcars and LRT
And the reason for all of this?

The war on Ford. Personalities, settling old scores and left versus right.

It’s nothing more.

Wait, wasn't that the driving force behind Ford's election victory: suburban rage, settling scores?

“I will not abandon the people of Scarborough and Finch Avenue to a second class transit solution that will inflict St. Clair Avenue style chaos on neighbourhoods without any promise of improved travel times,” the mayor wrote in a letter to the city last night.

The hilarious thing about the constant references to the St. Clair ROW is that it that projects troubles nothing to do with the plan itself, and everything to do with its piecemeal, ad hoc execution. If anything, Rob Ford's "make it up as we go" approach has more in common with that mess.

I won't touch Sue-Anne's piece because even more of a spittle-flecked ragegasm than her usual work.

For a more reasoned approach, here's Chris Selley from the Post:

For now, however, the vote stands as a win for common sense — or commoner sense, at least. And it’s an own goal for a Mayor who seems to genuinely believe he was elected solely by people who think LRTs are Satan’s chariots. Reality has forced Mr. Ford, like any mayor, into many climb-downs. But his death grip on his transit preferences remains, despite daunting feasibility reports on the Sheppard subway and his inability to gain the necessary support of council for his agreement with Metrolinx to bury the entire Eglinton line. He must regret not seeking that support before councillors grew their collective spine.

But they are. And you won't be disappointed... Ms. Levy is reaching new heights of personal insults.

roflmao oh wow...

"Had Ford & Co. thrown Stintz under the bus months ago, she'd have been exposed for what she is: The Self-Serving Woman Who Still thinks She's Destined to Be Mayor.

I have another thought.

Why doesn't Stintz spare us all and step down ASAP?

-- Yours truly"

The tears are so packed with flavour, lol

What random caps?

This part? The Self-Serving Woman Who Still thinks She's Destined to Be Mayor?

She was giving her a title. She should have capitalised "thinks" though.

It's hilarious watching the Fordites turn on Stintz. She voted in lockstep with him on 90 per cent of the issues until now. But Dear Leader and his minions will brook absolutely no disloyalty. It's bizarre.

A real fiscal conservative with the ability to string a sentence together running in opposition to Ford in the next election would be something to see.

I'm not sure why the Ford Bros think it's either 100% of our plan or stfu on this issue. It doesn't appear to be some horrible compromise.

They're getting their way on most of the agenda here. But every small defeat makes people think he's losing control of the city.

What's really weird here is that not one kilometre of actual subway was harmed in the making of this council decision. The Sheppard pipe dream is still on the table. All that Ford really lost was the bit of Eglington-Crosstown that he wanted to bury. And in exchange, his constituents in Etobicoke will get a new LRT where previously they would have had to ride the bus.

Yet somehow this is all about downtown elites blowing up subways and drinking the blood of the suburbs' children.

You forgot it is also about sticking it to the Mayor because... well because... well...

You can not build another subway under the yonge line. I've discussed this with transit planners and construction experts (I was once involved in an attempt to start a municipal political party) but if you head down Duplex, once you get to Yonge itself, the Subway is off to the side, and, you can shift back to the Bay area once you get south of Bloor. There thus is room for a second subway from Eglinton to Bay and Queen.

If digging underneath the existing subway tunnel is not workable, then building the express line parralel to the existing works well by me. From Queen (or King) north on Bay, with stops at Wellesley and Bay Station. From there going up Bay then reaching the west side of Yonge(stop at St. Clair with an underground foot connection to the existing station?) underneath the TTC yards then under Dupleix, and Eglinton (part of an expended Eglinton subway/LRT station). From there north under dupleix, parralel to Yonge up to the York Sheppard station.

Paralell would be difficult north of Eglinton, as it would mean under all the buildings. There are no easy fixes.

Yet we need to release some of the pressure on the Yonge line. What are the other options? A new line on Bayview? Not sure about the density and where does it go south of Davisville?

Resurrecting the Don Mills portion of the 1980' DRL plans? Transit City included an LRT there, so I am not sure at all about the density, plus Pape is to far west for a starting place for the DRL in my opinion. A thing is sure, no matter the merits of an LRT on Don Mills, I doubt that it would be the key to releasing some of the pressure on the Yonge Line.

Or the express line would could start from Eglinton, after all. I am a bit doubtful about how much of a release it would bring to the existing line, though. A lot, but would it be enough?
