Why would anyone answer "I refuse to answer" ? Isn't that a paradox right there ?

Interesting numbers. It seems to reflect the general distribution of those that are engaged in traditional politics and the population distribution more generally. I'm curious if this poll was taken at rabble, where they're proponents of activist politics, if the distribution would be different.

To be honest, I'm surprised that there are so many people above the age of 45 using the forum on a regular basis (since the poll has only been up a couple days, I'll assume the responses that are in now are mostly regulars).

Feel free not to answer because you'll be giving away your age and I made the poll anonymous for a reason, but were any of you in the above 45 group active users of BBS systems, HAM radio, or other forums of pre-internet mass communication? Forums like this were non-existent even 15 years ago (more or less), so this is a mode of communication that was created well into the time many of the posters here were adults. Does it still seem new or is it something you don't even think about anymore?

I've been a ham radio operator since the early 70's. Being in the high tech computer chip industry since its birth, I was there for the first true personal computer (Osbourne I), the rise of IBM and Apple, then sending files down telephone lines with acoustic coupled modems, local bulletin boards and then of course, the invention of the Internet.

When you grow up with this you tend to become accustomed to change. You even take it for granted! Changes in the computer world started off as revolutionary but quickly became evolutionary. A modem was revolutionary - a faster one merely evolutionary.

At first you were all caught up in having the latest and greatest. You couldn't wait to upgrade Win95 to Win98. After a while though things had progressed to the point where unless you were a gamer addict new upgrades no longer seemed necessary. Who needs a faster motherboard just to do word processing, spreadsheets or surf the Net? Cable and DSL were worthwhile but a faster computer or Win7 wasn't. Computer power has become "good enough" and what entices you are new features, like a video card with an HDMI output that will feed your flatscreen LED TV.

The industry seems almost mature now!

BBS?...it's all normal now, it's hard even to recall a time when I never had a cell phone, couldn't see why I would need one when they first came out, i can't live without now... my first computers-commodore 64...

I'm old enough that I should really pick a different handle. BC_Woman would be a little too in-between BC_2004 and American Woman. I can't do BC_bud because that's too close to bud, so I don't know. I'm thinking BCC for Beautiful British Columbia. The acronym would allude to my former handle and others can think of driving behind me. Or being blind-carbon-copied, whichever they prefer.

When I was a kid I lived in a cabin in the woods (north of 53º) that has no electricity, no running waster, no insulation. Lived in it all winter Hauled water from a hand operated pump well, cut our own wood, and had to build a fire every morning in the cast-iron stove that served as the only heat source, because it was below zero inside!

As ancient as that story sounds, it's not nearly as long ago as some of you are probably thinking.

No, it wasn't in Attawapiskat!

Man, I had blocked out the memories of the outhouse. It's all rushing back now!!

Lying in bed in the middle of a northern Manitoba winter, the fire having burned out hours ago, and the house already cooled down to well below zero. Those layered blankets pulled right up over your head, and the sudden realization that you have to go to the bathroom. It's too cold to even pull the covers back, never mind get your boots and coat on. When you finally realize that you're not going to be able to hold it any longer, you suit up and trudge through the snow to the outhouse in that vicious -45 windchill, quickly drop drawers and sit on the coldest toilet seat in the word.

For those still thinking that this must have been back in frontier days or something... we are talking about the mid-1980's.

We used to have to walk to school ten miles in de snowstorm, and I had only paper shoes, when I was a kid back in Guadalajara.
