You would think that setting up living quarters in the park would not be required to protest, a rotating protest could be setup.

You'd think. But this protest isn't really about highlighting income equity anymore. It's about the protest. No one is really talking about any of the issues highlighted by the protesters anymore.

I'd actually argue these Occupy protests are a digression from actually very important issues.

There is no right to protest as long as you want to on private property. Stop pretending there is.

Zuccotti Park is a privately owned public space. You are incredibly ignorant of what the actual rules are here. Instead of spending so much time weaving together some fictitious narrative to support your ideology, you may want to actually educate yourself about what's going on.

Here's the article ordering Bloomberg to allow the protesters back in... with their tents.

It's funny how the "powers that be" are ok with protests as long as they show up and go home. The very last thing they want is a sustained protest that makes people that aren't even involved start asking uncomfortable questions. That's the purpose of Occupy and that's why the government is resorting to violence to end it.

Really?

Then why have no formal demands been made. There appears to be no end-game involved in these protests.

Exactly, it's privately owned. Regardless, you're not allowed to use it as a camp ground. It's against the law. Protesting doesnt mean camping.

The Occupy Wall Street protesters now have a New York Supreme Court Order permitting them back into Zuccotti Park complete with tents and other things need to maintain their on-going protests.

The Order:

Seems the courts don't work for the 1% like they originally thought.

The mayor disagrees ...

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said this morning, in response to the restraining order, that the park would not be re- opened until the city had an opportunity to address the restraining order. A hearing is scheduled for later Tuesday morning with

duled for later Tuesday morning with Justice Lucy Billings of State Supreme Court.

The New York Times reports that when protesters returned to a barricaded Zuccotti Park with the judge's order, police there refused to let them enter. Police grabbed a man who jumped the barricade; he and another man taking photographs he and another man taking photographs were arrested.

And it appears that not all city councillors agree with Bloomberg:

mong those arrested today was New York City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, who City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, who had gone to Zuccotti Park when he learned of the eviction. He tweeted early this morning that he was at Central Booking, "arrested while showing support for #ows Fellow councilman Jumaane Williams, who was also at the protest site, tweeted that Rodriguez was "bleeding from the head thanks to the #NYPD."

That's the point ... it's about engaging people in the discussions, and keeping it all very public, not handing it off to anyone who then goes behind closed doors and buries it.

It's about keeping it VERY uncomfortable for the powers that be ... :)

Rumour has it the cities attorneys aren't even present at the hearing. Media's not being allowed in right now, so it's unconfirmed.

How does squatting in a public park make the 1% uncomfortable?

It isn't a negotiation. It is a protest. It highlights the essence of a true democracy and has raised the concern that the 1% are usurping democracy.

So there are no demands to be made. Discussion is its goal and it continues to succeed.

Well Shady is wrong again. Imagine that.

Camping is permitted on private property and they city can't make a by-law or rule after the property owner allows camping, and expect it to succeed. By-laws can not generally apply in the past, since the only enforcement is through a eyewitness account....(at least under Canadian law).

The mayor is in contempt! He might be dealt with by the judge when he gets in front of her.

It isn't a public park. It is privately owned by Brookfield Properties.

And the protest is actually taking place on the street as the protesters line the sidewalks and chant against the suits walking down the street.

Public places cannot be privately owned. It becomes private land at that point.

In NY they can be: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/priv/priv.shtml

edit: forgot to add the quote

Since its inception, the program has produced more than 3.5 million square feet of public space in exchange for additional building area or other considerations such as relief from certain height and setback restrictions.

I'm sure that'll traumatize them. Counting their money at the end of the day will probably cheer them up though.

BTW if Brookfield demanding they be evicted would that be illegal?

They allowed them to camp. They would need a lawful reason to evict them. Sanitation concerns have been addressed by a sanitation committee. Safety concerns are being addressed by a security committee. They have no reason to evict.

Regardless, it's all moot. The court granted an injunction saying that the city cannot evict them or enforce any new rules created after the occupation began. They broke this injunction their eviction this morning, then the court created a new order requiring the city to allow the protesters back into Zuccotti Park with all of their belongings (tents included). The city is refusing to comply with this order as well. So, the fact of the matter is that Bloomberg has broken the law several different ways today.

Well then Bloomberg should claim that he broke those laws in protest. That protest is protected by his freedom of speech. :D

Nope a judge just repealed that injunction. No camping in zucotti park. Apparently bloomberg didn't break the law.

Here's a story about it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15749348

A New York court has ruled that a pre-dawn police raid on the Occupy Wall Street camp at Zuccotti Park was legal.

The ruling means protesters will remain barred from setting up tents and sleeping in the park, although New York officials say protest will be allowed.

Police arrested some 200 people in a surprise pre-dawn raid on Zuccotti Park and later held several journalists.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the police clearout was prompted by public health and safety concerns.

Nope it isn't.

The protesters just moved to Central Park and set up camp.

Central Park has a curfew from 1:00am until 6:00am. The park is closed during those hours. Should be interesting to see what develops.

What part of you can't camp in city parks don't you people understand?

The Precedent has been set. There's nothing to stop the City of New York to do the exact same thing they did today.

I'm sure they'd be far less patient with people squatting in one of the city's tourist attractions.
