Too bad waylaying this thread doesn't solve the US's dilema, maybe you'll get the UN and/or NATO to pull your chestnuts out of the fire before it's too late... I know your admin is trying real hard to do just that... GWiz Posted March 17, 2011 Author Report Posted March 17, 2011 LOL! But you're OK with your Prime Minister's date with Ghaddafi? Interesting...maybe Martin was in on it too. Nope, gave him a "royal blast" for going to see him, what'd you say to YOUR hero for pardoning him so that Martin would and could see him? - The reporter says about Qaddafi" --- "He was at pains to explain how he and President Bush were alike, saying "We are on the same wavelength". In all his years as a bad boy in the eyes of the West, he said, Libya was simply doing what Bush did when he invaded Iraq. "Bush is saying that America is fighting for the triumph of freedom," Gaddafi said between sips of tea. "When we were supporting liberation movements in the world, we were arguing that it was for the victory of freedom. We both agree. We were fighting for the cause of freedom." At the time, it may have sounded like the typical ramblings of the Libyan leader. But now, a year later, Gaddafi and Bush do apparently see eye to eye. On Monday, Gaddafi accomplished one of history's great diplomatic turnarounds when Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice announced that the U.S. was restoring full diplomatic relations with Libya and held up the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya as "a model" for others to follow. Rice attributed the ending of the U.S.'s long break in diplomatic relations to Gaddafi's historic decision in 2003 to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and renounce terrorism as well as Libya's "excellent cooperation in response to common global threats faced by the civilized world since September 11, 2001." But as much as the Bush Administration would like to believe it, Gaddafi's decision to come in from the cold was not simply a response to the war on terror and the U.S.'s toppling of Saddam and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan before that. In TIME interviews with key Libyan players, including three with Gaddafi going back before 9/11, it was clear that other important factors were also at work. Foremost among them was the collapse of the Soviet empire, which brought down Gaddafi's once-powerful friends in capitals like Moscow, Prague and Bucharest. Another important factor was the rise of Islamic fundamentalists in the Middle East, which resulted in extremist attacks in Libya and against Gaddafi personally. - http://islamnewsroom.com/news-we-need/1507-qaddafi-qim-the-bush-of-libyaq ps - Getting Bush to go after Bin Laden, a sworn enemy of Gaddafi, two birds with one stone? Moonlight Graham Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Because of Bush's actions in Iraq and the general way the US is seen because of that action the US is now placed in a no win situation when it comes to Libya... If Ghadaffi succeeds in putting down the uprising in Libya; recapturing all that the rebels have gained, which is quite possible; where does that leave ALL those people in the ME/North Africa that have and are standing up for freedom and hopefully a more democratic way of living for millions of people? Even Egypt can "turn" (hopefully not) if someone like Ghadaffi can overcome a rebellion inspite of EVERYONE being against him... When Bush took Ghadaffi "off the hook" he unleashed what may become the worst thing to befall the US and the world since 9/11... The United States has become a toothless tiger, because the US has no other choices left... I pretty much agree. The U.S. has used up virtually all of its political capital in the Arab world, thanks to Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran war drums, and not to mention its strong support for Israel and decades of mucking with governments in the middle-east. Bush's policies is a large part of this. Now the US has to sit on the sidelines, reluctant to even support a no-fly zone. Should be interesting to see how everyone on the UNSC votes on the likely no-fly zone resolution. It will be interesting to see the fallout if the West does not intervene in the democratic Libyan uprising and Ghadaffi is able to eventually crush the rebellion. You see I really don't like the guy, never did, never understood why Bush did like him enough to let him off the hook... Just one more reason not to like Bush either... Yeah, you're right, Bin Laden was/is a bad guy, likes to plant bombs in places, lives and eats with his "brothers" in the desert and in caves, doesn't have a country to call his own, Clinton told Bush all about him... Now, Ghadaffi likes to hijack and blow up airplanes, likes to live large in luxury, uses a lot of "outside" hired help, has his own country with some oil, hmmmm, I wonder...
