You mean like the ONLY Japan Disaster thread here on MLW calling it the "Empire of Japan"?

Well...Oleg...yah know....

Japan isn't the military dictatorship that it was during WW2...most folks know that. I hope...

Hey, my uncle still hates the Japanese after USMC service in the Pacific during WW2...the hate burns deep in his old crusty ass. China and Korea still haven't resolved all war related issues (e.g. comfort girls).

Yes indeed. I don't blame them as the War in the Pacific was beyond brutal. March of Death, etc...

Shakeyhands: Most seem like kids, I bet their parents are ignorant too. This sort of stuff seems to be passed down.

I doubt they're as callous as they seem. There is a certain mindset which says black humour, acting outrageous, somehow makes you seem dark and tough and edgy, and I think that's what these people are going for. It's easy to do from afar, especially when you don't know anyone involved.

Immaturity helps, too, of course, and a lack of empathy.

It is an inverted moral calculus that tries to persuade the world to demonize one state that tries its civilized best to abide in a difficult time and place, and rides merrily by the examples and practices of dozens of states and leaderships that drop into brutality every day without a twinge of regret or a whisper of condemnation. - Rex Murphy

Yeah, I don't get the impression of hardcore, thought-out hatred here. I suppose a few bona fide Japanese-haters might be scattered among the bloviators, but for the most part it's probably pretty much as you say.

Hey, there's still something lingering in some Japanese minds too...

Something considerably WORSE than anything the Japanese did to Americans...

It's one thing doing things to people with uniforms on and guns to fight back with... It's something else to "take out" CIVILIAN moms walking their kids home from school by the thousands I'm thinking...

TWICE even... Now that's what I call "teaching a lesson" not soon forgotten...

KABOOM! KABOOM! Lesson given... Lesson learned...

During the war, the Japanese set their own tone as to how events unfolded early on. Their brutality to both military prisoners and civilians is well documented. Plus, the Allies were all too aware that the Japanese soldiers fought to the death. Almost no exceptions. Japanese civilians also participated in suicide attacks against Allied forces on islands such as Saipan and Okinawa. Innocence is merely a word during total war.

Then you aren't thinking very much...it was total war...and it didn't matter whether they were German moms or Japanese moms. The incendiaries can't tell the difference. The Chinese had "moms walking with their kids too"...until the Japanese "took them out".

SS Tjisalak

On the 26 March 1944, during a cruise into the Indian Ocean, I-8 torpedoed the 5,787-ton Dutch freighter SS Tjisalak. The submarine surfaced amid the debris field and after a brief exchange of gunfire with the ship's defensive armament, collected the survivors on the submarine's deck. Shortly after the freighter had sunk, the merchantman's crew and passengers, totalling 97, were tied together and forced to run a gauntlet of Japanese sailors, during which they were slashed with samurai swords and beaten with monkey wrenches and sledgehammers before being shot, then kicked into the water. Six men managed to survive and found a life raft. They were later rescued by the Liberty ship, SS James O. Wilder.

Rape of Nanking

DOP is right about the Japanese setting the tone for the Pacific war but how long do you hold the grudge? How many generations do you pass it along? We have seen what happens in places like the Balkans, people massacring each other over things that happened long before they were born.

99.999% of those posting the hate comments were born long after the war ended. I hope they hate all the Japanese technology that bwent into their computers, i-Pods, cellphones, etc, that they couldn't live without.

And the fact that most of the Japanese cars they drive are built in North America.

On a semi-related note... if you're among the millions who've been thinking "man, I'd love to have an excuse to punch Gilbert Gottfried in the face", today is your lucky day!

Aflac Insurance has dropped Gottfried as the voice of the Aflac Duck after Gottfried posted a series of off-colour jokes on Twitter.

Now... I'm not opposed to comedians (or alleged comedians, in Gottfried's case) saying whatever they like, because it's a free country.

However, I'm also not opposed to Aflac dumping Gottfried for this, because they can also hire whoever the hell they like to appear in their commercials, and they do an enormous amount of business in Japan, apparently.

Also, I'm surprised that voicing the Aflac Duck is an actual paying job. They could replace Gottfriend with Jimmy from the mail room, and nobody would notice the difference. It's not like we're talking about Flo from Progressive here.

Also, I'd punch Gottfried if I got the opportunity. Even if he hadn't mocked the dead in Japan. He's just really really annoying.

At least the Germans atoned for their sins.

Japan approaches its atrocities differently: Yahoo.

With all of that said, I honestly wonder whether I should suffer for the sins of my grandmothers or grandfathers. The only logic I can see is that people may hesitate to do evil if they know that their grandchildren will also suffer.

I doubt that is much of a consideration when most of these things happen. Neither of these countries thought they were going to lose so reprisals wouldn't be an issue. Germany and Japan have learned well. Both have become among the most stable and prosperous democracies on the planet and both are reluctant to send their military outside their own borders. Sure there are some vestiges of the old Samurai and neo Nazi mentality but they do not reflect the reality of either country.

But in fact, they lost.
