bloodyminded Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 People say bad things about Sultans of Swing? Well, now I think of it, it might have been just one guy. "Cheesy song," (even if true, most great rock songs are "cheesy," not that I care for that particular word, personally); "guitar sound is more about style than proficiency" (I'm paraphrasing)... to which I'd respond both with "So what?" and "not entirely." But yeah, one guy. So not too meaningful, eh? I dunno, I'm pretty terrible......in that case, I may have to concede. -k Oh yes. You're learning to play guitar. I am not; I can't play, except for terrible renditions of a couple of learn-to-play-guitar standards. So....that's that. I believe the LGBTG (whatever the acronym for those types is... ) nutter that got offended by the certain lyrics of that certain song... Has been made a laughing stock by sane people everywhere.. BubberMiley Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 The CRTC has branded Dire Straights 'Enemy of the People', no?? Nope. It was the Broadcast Standards Council, which is the radio stations themselves. But that's just because the song included one of the banished words. There are lots of banished words and they get bleeped or blandly rerecorded all the time. It's just because radio wants to appeal to all people. It's kind of nice to have such refuges in this age of inappropriate and obnoxious content. Quote "I think it's fun watching the waldick get all excited/knickers in a knot over something." -scribblet
kimmy Posted February 19, 2011 Author Report Posted February 19, 2011 Well said, Bubber. The sheer number of songs that have "radio-friendly" edits makes it hard for me to get the derision that this particular decision was met with. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

It's not as if the song is an anti-"faggot" anthem, or something. Good Lord. Quote As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand. --Josh Billings
jbg Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 There is another thing to credit Holly with, and it was his major talent as a songwriter, and that was creating musical and lyrical "hooks".I think Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan and the Beatles were early influences on moving rock towards intellible and intelligent lyrics. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).
