According to Reuters, she's alive and in surgery. link

Updated: 2:55 p.m.

Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot on Saturday morning while hosting an event outside a Tucson grocery store.

Giffords spokesperson C.J. Karamargin told The Washington Post Saturday afternoon that Giffords was in surgery at Tucson's University Medical Center.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed that Giffords had been shot in the head and was in critical condition Saturday afternoon. Eight others were brought to the hospital with Giffords, including seven adults and one child, all of whom were in either critical or serious condition. The hospital has scheduled a briefing for 1:30 p.m. local time on Saturday.

She was the first Jewish congresswoman and it was a mass shooting with an automatic, very tragic, the shooter is in custody. I wouldn't go assigning any motives right now until more is known, she was a supporter of gun rights. Heck one Daily Kos reader was pretty upset with her, so who knows, but more likely just a crazed nut job.

According to the New York Times, a protester was removed from a similar gathering in 2009 when his gun fell on the supermarket floor. link

Seems almost impossible that there haven't been any deaths yet considering the close range of the shots. One can only hope that everyone will pull through.

Yeah right! I expect all of the rightwing pro-gun nutcases to go into their bunkers for awhile after this. Here's what we do know so far about how the right wing leaders have fomented random violence through the their demagoging and over-the-top rhetoric:

Ariz. Congresswoman Giffords shot; Dad: 'Entire Tea Party' her enemy

Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/ariz_congresswoman_shot_in_head_YFTvsurRHy5OWGSRKnuK8J#ixzz1ATgoFGlM

"Yeah," he told The Post. "The whole tea party."

He added that politicians constantly faced danger.

"They always get threat[ened]," Giffords cried. "We don’t really have any information. The Police department was supposed to call us but they didn't."

From Matt Yglesias: ad for an anti-Giffords meeting on June 12:

Fun campaign event: "Help remove Gabrille Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly"

also, her office was vandalized in 2009

Daily Kos Blogger - Land Of Enchantment has put together a page on this Jesse Kelly, who ran for the Republican nomination, and posted that ad: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2011/1/8/934297/-Second-Amendment-Solutions-%28pictures,-continuing-updates%29

Also worth keeping in mind, last month shots were fired at Congressman Raul Grijalva's headquarters, no suspects were apprehended.

And maybe any Facebook users here can tell me if Sarah Palin has removed a page on her site that reportedly had pictures of 20 Democratic Congresspersons (including Gabrielle Giffords) with gunsight targets.

Maybe after this outrage, Democrats...especially you President Obama, will grow some balls and put that stupid 2nd Amendment in it's proper context: the wording that the gun nuts used also includes the phrase:"well regulated militia" in it! It doesn't say any nut with a pickup truck gets to buy an automatic and drive around with it in the front seat! One of the great unreported stories of 2010, has been the discovery that most of the guns used by drug gangs in Mexico for mass-killings, are coming from the U.S.

Did they put her in a gunsight? Or, did they threaten her with violence, like the frequent tea party threats that outraged her father? NO! Then shut up! We know where the violence, and the threats of violence are coming from, and it's not coming from liberals or leftists. It's coming from right wing clowns who expect to get their way one way or another!

America should wake up and stop killing their own politicians! I wonder if this will get the politicians to, at least, think, gun control? Probably not, only in America. Sad.

Americans kill each other to the tune of about 17,000 per year.....what makes you think politicians aren't part of the mix?

Actually, it was demographic targets, not people, although she did list people's names. Here's a link to her facebook page: link

Hey remember a few months ago when Palin named her Target's list? You know the one where she posted pictures with politicians districts in gun sights? Guess who was one of them?

Just saying.

"Don't retreat--reload!" that was the slogan but the Republican VP candidate right?

BTW she took down that map today of all days I wonder why?

Sigh, here we go assigning motives that aren't there, blame the tea party although there's no reason to do so. Sarah Palin was 'targeting' areas for politics/demographic, not shooting anyone.

She obviously took it down because she knew how left wingers would spin it, next thing they'll be blaming her for the shooter's actions.

This shows very clearly that in a "Democracy" country, people don't love democracy, they love winning instead, when they lose, they believe violence to be a solution.

That is because "democracy" encourages people be selfish, fight for own right and interest, in stead of think for others and help others.

"Don't retreat--reload!" Right?

Seems to me you had no problem blaming the left wing that wasn't happy with her but when someone points out the right wing also had motives you dismiss them instantly. Don't worry they will get to the bottom of this

BTW the guy is clearly crazy I don't think any person who is all there could do this however if Republicans hate speak influenced him they own the country an apology.

She didn't take it down. I posted a link to it. Here it is again: link

I stand corrected.

TMP has an accounting of the shooters Internet history he seems pretty crazy. He rambles a lot and talks about currency that should be backed with gold and silver. How the government controls peoples minds with grammar, and how he can not accept the Constitution with the " ratifications" to it.

I am sure we will know more about him as time goes on.

His ideology doesn't seem to fit any side so the left is going to have a real problem pinning this on the tea party, it seems his favorite books include Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto !

He's definately confused then...

Extreme right and left wing books are his favourites...

He's confused because he's interested in political history?

I'd say that's the least compelling argument that he's messed up/

Not because he's interested in political history...I've read both of those...

But I suspect that scriblett is suggesting that because the nutter has read both of those books that he's a member of the "Looney Left"...

The Communist Manifesto would definately qualify as a book of the Left...

Mein Kampf is really a blueprint for the NAZI party. Most feel that's the most virulent form of right wing extremism the planet has seen...

SOP for the right wing aparatchiks with their collective inability to admit the skeletons in their historical closet...Generally,it's the "Blame everything on the left" excuse come to life....

And I agree,it's the least compelling arguement that he's a nutcase...

The information about Jared Lee Loughner don't make him sound like a Tea Party type.

They make him sound like something of a fruitcake... more akin to the various self-proclaimed "Free Men" who've wandered through this forum in the past than to any organized political group.

Why is it that the first thing people want to do is blame this or that party, or ideology. With no real facts, no investigation, nothing. It just happened, and people are dead, even children! What is wrong with us. It seems to me this whole internet thing is used to hype everything up, to make people stupid and crazy.

True enough. When a disturbed man flew his plane into a building in a sort of crazed, impromptu form of tax revolt, much was made of his quoting a communist idea; and much was made of his libertarian remarks as well.

Conservative, liberal, libertarian, socialist/leftist...these are all traditions of Western liberal thought, and all have perfectly legitimate points to make. If the plan here is to undermine any of these modes of political philosophy through guilt-by-association, I think we're best not to indulge this plan too deeply.
