bush_cheney2004 Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Power and wealth are more accountable and transparent to people in Port-au-Prince than here? I doubt that. But there is far less of it...you know...to make you happy. You can bathe in open sewers and be rid of the filthy wealth and power. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

GostHacked Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 What BC fails to appreciate is how an undying support and faith in government only acts like a lens that invites sceptics to want to peer ever closer. Of course. BC knows what the real deal is, and deed down he agrees with me. But that does not create any kind of 'debate'. So he throws crap out and expect us to debate on items that have little to no relevance to the topic at hand. But those who don't have a brain will buy into whatever they are told, because there really is no more critical thinking. If there was critical thinking involved, people would make more of a scene about it. Quote

eyeball Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 And what you fail to appreciate is walking the talk by moving to a place that has none or a very ineffective version. I prefer to stay and make the version I've got better thanks. It'll only be when enough people around the world feel the same way about their's that most if not all locations will become safer places to be. In the meantime I can't help but notice the versions you and I've got have the propensity to move to places where people have little if any effective laws or means to protect themselves from exploitation. This capacity to preach law and order while also evading it is a prime example of the moral and cognitive dissonance that likely drives people nuts and compels them to acts of violence. I don't rational discussion or debate from you. I get one liners that in many cases have no relevance to the issue at hand, and does not further any kind of rational debate. Quote

dre Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 Not really, if we had giant scanners hanging over the highway and every car, dutiable item, passport, etc, had a built in RFID tag you could probably drive through the things at full speed and have all the needed info automatically collected. Would also need a way to rapidly identify the people in the cars too I guess, that would be a harder technological problem. Facial recognition and high quality properly positioned cameras would do the trick in most cases but not if people had their faces intentionally obscured. I guess using an x-ray scanner to determine if any people are hidden in the vehicle in combination with requiring all properly seated passengers in the vehicle to make their faces easily visible while crossing the border would mostly work. Border patrol officers in vehicles could then pursue and pull over any non-compliant cars. Downside would be being subjected to xray radiation every time you cross the border, but that's probably inevitably going to be implemented at some point in the future anyway. Youd still have to harmonize laws to deal with smuggling though, unless those scanners can find things like guns and weed. I guess I just wonder what the point is. And even if we built all THAT, as soon as something inevitably went wrong, there would be a movement to ratchet up security more. I dont think we really had any problems before, when we allowed cross border travel without passports. You used to just have to flash your drivers license. But when something like 911 happens, the government and their pals see a chance to grow the security industry and vast sums of money are easily extracted from the idiotic tax payers. My guess is the goalposts will just move again as something else goes wrong. Quote I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger
Topaz Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 Yes...you are wrong....there is no way in hell that the border will disappear like that. If anything, the Americans are investing billions in border patrol and enforcement. No? I guess they'll just "harmonize" the border. Quote
jbg Posted January 7, 2011 Report Posted January 7, 2011 No? I guess they'll just "harmonize" the border. Sort of the way that the HST makes Canadians sing in sweet harmony?
