Never let a good international crisis go to waste...plans to attack DPRK nuclear facilities just moved one step forward on the game board.

Could be reactions to the falling Price of the US dollar. Nothing like a war to get one's economy going again.

Nice reduction but it also states that NK claims marine boundaries were violated and they were firing shells in a disputed area. And some analysts have come forward and said it is wrong to condemn NK unilaterally in this incident.

There must be more to it than this, since as you already admit, they conduct such exercises routinely, all the time. So why did this one suddenly trigger a military response. It's quite likely that we are not being told the whole story here.

While I am sure that a spotter with the help of GPS could pinpoint the particular spot on open water where shells landed harmlessly....the response of shelling a populated area with live shells goes way beyond the pale and into the realm of disprortinate force. Surely Goldstone should launch a fact finding mission....

Yes, agreed it is rather... disproportionate

I guess US like another war again.

Every US president need a war to help the weapon makers sell the weapons.

Obama did not launch a new war yet and his other changes are fail.

So he may not be able to change anything at all include the war.

So I guess he want keep flirt near NK until NK angry so that he can launch a new war, is this possible?

Yes, it must be all Obama's fault. Before he came on the scene, the North and South were always flowers and puppies and candy canes.

South Korea's defence minister has resigned amid criticism of his handling of North Korea's shelling of an island near their disputed maritime border.

Seems to me someone messed up which ended in the result of North Korea lobbing shells.

Yeah, this might come back to bite M. Dancer in the ass.

I highly doubt it. After the sinking of the Cheonan, the president, just like he did a couple of days ago, promised widespread retaliation if it happened again. To me it looks like a member of the government falling on their sword to make up for the fact that they can't.

The North won't do a full scale attack unless they are backed by China (personal assumption). China is currently in no position to project any kind of force anywhere. Was that missile off California a simple 'HI THERE!!!!' from China? If so, that is definitely putting the US on edge and might be an indicator of their real military power.

All parties involved need to be very careful, this can get ugly real fast. But I don't think we will see anything for a couple years. Once China is ready to take to the seas in large numbers then we can expect some escalation in the trading of the fire. Until then the SK and US currently have an advantage.

I think all sides know the risks of any attack, except NK, and even they know there is limitations...that being said once those limitations are meet, it won't just involve NK, SK, and the US, it will quickly get out of control, and involve most of the free world....Korea is one armed camp, and when it goes off it will be huge....

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

China is certainly in a position to project force anywhere in Asia. Don't think otherwise. As for the North only doing what China wants, don't be so sure. They did this without Chinese support, they tested nuclear weapons against the expressed wishes of Beijing. Hell, they attacked South Korea in 1950 without the prior blessing of eithe China or the Soviet Union. If they're backed into a small enough corner I could see them attacking without support.

This supposes China will support them. That won't happen. I've said this multiple times but people keep ignoring this; the fact that China has actually been cooperating regarding North Korea. The Chinese don't see North Korea as an ally and a country within it's orbit. It sees North Korea as a nuissance which it has to put up wit due to the shared border. Do you really think the Chinese enjoy paying out welfare to a country that can't get its act together? China props up the regime for one reason and one reason only: refugees. Thousands already flee over the Yalu river into China to escape the regime. If the KWP were to collapse the only way out of the North is into China as the DMZ is the most heavily mined area on the planet. If there were a way to depose the Korean regime with a more stable government in a way that doesn't cause a complete collapse, behind closed doors China would support it.

We can only hope it dies with a whimper not a bang, like the USSR did.

NK knows the risks, their risks are just different than ours. Instead of human losses, their risks are the loss of power. They aren't necessarily worried about how many people die. Especially considering that of a population of around 23 million, 500,000-1,000,000 are currently imprisoned in corrective labour gulags which duplicate those of the USSR in the 30s, 40s and 50s.

That won't happen until the Kims die and the cult of personality is destroyed. It's hard to know what people believe or don't, but considering some of the video footage of the death of Kim Il Sung, it's not hard to believe that these people are completely brainwashed to believe what they belief. After the death of Stalin, people cried in the same way. Talk to anyone who lived through the period and they'll say after knowing what we know now, it's disgusting how we could've felt that way about a man so heinous, but they did.

Why? Won't it be in everyone's interest to see the NK dog put down as quickly as possible?

There are roughly 13,000 artillery pieces within range of Seoul. 60% Korea's population lives within firing range of the border. A lot of people will get killed.

Yep all true. But the Kim dynasty can't last forever.

ArmyGuy implied the conflict would escalate beyond Korea.

It probably would...There would be a cascading effect through treaty's like what happened at the outbreak of World War 1...

The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!
