Molly Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Yes, it does. It will be very interesting to see what it does to some of those NDP MP's come next election. It seems to me that some of them could pay an ugly price. Conservatives are already licking their chops, anticipating recieving the votes of the disenchanted, but I don't think the equation is quite that simple. The NDP will lose some votes over it, but I can't see them moving very far. Quote "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" — L. Topaz Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 And yet, despite the registry, the cops are still dead. So what is the answer BAND ALL guns to private citzens???? Quote
capricorn Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 153 votes to save the long gun registry versus 151 to unload it. Oh well, time to write another cheque to the Conservative Fund. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs." Will Rogers

So are those Tories re-election in trouble too? Quote
Evening Star Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 I think they were in trouble anyway tbh. Quote
Evening Star Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 That said, it's probably easier to tell your constituents "I had to vote along party lines for the good of (conservatism, parliament, being able to continue representing you as a Tory MP)" than to explain "I could vote any way I wanted and I chose to vote against your wishes". Quote
capricorn Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 It was pointed out today that the Tories in the Quebec ridings are NOT voting by what the people want but by Harper wants. So are those Tories re-election in trouble too? Scrapping the gun registry was a campaign promise made by the Conservatives. Those Quebec MPs were elected by voters who knew full well that this was a policy of the party they were voting for. So no, I don't believe those who voted Conservative last time around will punish Conservative incumbents based solely on this issue. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. scribblet Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 I put my money where my mouth is a couple of weeks ago LOL One thing that really disgusts me is the spin Ignatieff is putting on this, ergo if you want to do away the long-gun registry you are condoning domestic violence. Jack Weber Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Time for the Liberals to be put down a few pegs in the polls. I agree...But that won't help the NDP in this case...If anything, alot of people on the fence are going to vote Conservative for a while... I wonder of Harper is starting to think this might be a good time to rig his demise so he can have an election and get the majority he craves??? capricorn Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Time for the Liberals to be put down a few pegs in the polls. Alta4ever Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Doubt it, he'll wait until spring, when I think there has to be an election ? I'm sure it will be sooner then that. This is the spark the will fire the conservative base again. It may push a few NDP seats the conservatives way now. Quote "What about the legitimacy of the democratic process, yeah, what about it?" There doesn't have to be an election until fall of 2013.....according to actual law, not a fake fixed election law (which should place the next election in fall 2012). Quote

capricorn Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Long-time gun-control advocate Wendy Cukier said Wednesday she realizes the fight isn't over for lobby groups.“I think many of us will be relieved for a couple of days, but we have a prime minister who has said he is committed to dismantling the registry, we have opposition parties talking about measures they plan to introduce,” she said at an eleventh-hour news conference. “We won't rest.” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/gun-registry-lives-but-harper-vows-to-keep-up-the-fight/article1719471/ Cukier and Avaaz have their work cut out for them. It would be interesting to know how much money they raise in donations to mount the next phase of their anti-gun campaign. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Molly Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 It was pointed out today that the Tories in the Quebec ridings are NOT voting by what the people want but by Harper wants. So are those Tories re-election in trouble too? Not likely. The Conservatives have been consistent- hate it and voted that way. No doubts about it, and no bait and switch. The Liberals have likewise been consistent- a policy of that party, and they voted to preserve it. The NDP, though, especially a few MPs (like Stoffer) talked one story for years, and then did a last minute about-face. The vote that was supposed to be conscience appears to have been whipped; the 'improve it' song and dance is obvious rhetorical horse-pucks--- Seriously, if anyone pays, it'll be the NDP. And anyone who could have voted Conservative on the basis of this single issue, but already chose not to one or more times, isn't going to swing from hard left to hard right over it now. Topaz Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 If you think the Tories won't be hurt by this think again. Our Rep is a Tory and people at the local Timmy's were saying that OUR Rep voted how the leader wanted them to and that we all here should e-mail our Rep and say he's done in the next election. If the police say they need this registry then that all citizens need to know. I will say I was watching the vote and I did notice that my Rep. didn't look too happy. I think this will hurt all parties but the Bloc. BTW, did you know that at one time Harper himself was FOR the registry? CBC's Power and Politics, showed him saying he suported it and then changing his mind when the vote came. Quote
Smallc Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 How about the green Party? I meant a real alternative. Quote
Topaz Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 Harper and Hoeppner started the ball rolling to whip their supporters into them vs us mode. The PM of Canada stood on those stairs and his remark were very unlike a PM should do. He suppose the PM on Canada and not sided with one side or the other, epecially in a very serious topic of gun control. This PM is definitely a divider of this country! http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/100922/national/gun_registry_vote Quote
