"There's a safety issue here. I don't want my kids walking past it," said Kathy Cash, 38, a mother of three children who attend Public School 52 around the corner on E. 29th St. "It's disgusting," said Cash, "they [Muslims] have no respect."

"My children are scared and I am too," said Victor Benari, 56, trying to rally neighbors against the mosque during a civic group meeting on Monday. "This is a security issue."

"We will not be submissive," the notice proclaimed. "Our voices are going to be heard!" The alert went on to question what its authors described as Islamic beliefs. It suggested that participants sing during the rally because Muslim "women are forbidden to sing." It suggested that rally participants bring dogs because Muslims "hate dogs."

The Temecula Islamic Center is just one of many Muslim construction projects to draw fire from right-wing groups this year. Those protesting the California construction site include the pastor of a neighboring Baptist church who recently told the Los Angeles Times he was upset about the construction plan because the mosque and community center will turn the town into "a haven for Islamic extremists."

Some opponents have said that Islam is a political movement, not a religion, and that the mosque could also be used as a training center for terrorists.

"Most people don't understand what they are dealing with," said Rutherford County resident Bob Hayes, who was among the speakers to voice opposition before the county commission last month. "You are dealing with a terrorist organization. They want to rule the world."

As a mother and a grandmother, I worry, Ms. Serafin said. I learned that in 20 years with the rate of the birth population, we will be overtaken by Islam, and their goal is to get people in Congress and the Supreme Court to see that Shariah is implemented. My children and grandchildren will have to live under that.

I do believe everybody has a right to freedom of religion, she said. But Islam is not about a religion. Its a political government, and its 100 percent against our Constitution.

Well, according to the article, that Mosque had direct ties with extremists who were involved in terrorism.

Not so with the others I mentioned.

Aye...all hysteria. You gotta wonder where New Yorkers get this nasty Islamophobia from...eh?

Have you read any of the links I offered? It's about a lot more than New Yorkers.

They get their fear because they're ignorant.

Eight attackers linked by their ties to radical London mosque

The ethnic mix of the eight London bombers, ranging from young Somalis to Yorkshire-born sons of Pakistani parents and an Anglo-Jamaican convert, has surprised investigators.

What's more prevalent, anti-mosque hysteria or mosque-related radicalism? I think we know the answer.

I see. Not because of the ol' Boom Boom...naturally. Just plain ignorant.

You can try to justify their hatred--and your own--all you like. Others understand better.

Make sure you face Mecca when you put your butt in the air.

I don't tremble in fear at the sight of a Mosque (like the poor, ignorant souls quoted in the articles).

That's it.

I'd insist that the fellow in front of you wash his feet before prayer a tad better. No wonder the dang name means 'submission'.

Your fear is the submission here.

Maybe you should read the articles that generated the thread before you comment. That's a fine suggestion.

No need. Islam sucks. Perhaps you think blind submission to an invisible being is quaint. Anyone else found doing it would be labeled insane. Not to mention the kiddie porn aspect of this particular cult. Disturbing.

Just out of curiosity, are we now going to be presented with threads about every single mosque in every city in every country that has had any negative reaction to it?

Anyone care to make a guess as to how many threads we'd end up with?

Apparently I am supposed to submit myself to Jesus to be saved because he died for our sins. All religions demand some degree of submission. You first have to submit yourself to believe in a god, then follow the rules of that god.

If I am eating a cracker to symbolize Jesus' flesh, does that make me a cannibal?

Which is why I think all the god-types are frickin' nuts. It only gets testy though when they try to impose themselves upon the community at large. A few do this more than others. Some to certain degrees of violence.

I'm not talking about submission, blind or otherwise. I'm talking about the stated, explicit fear towards peaceable and blameless Muslims.

????

That's an odd thing to say.

I count three so far; one of which is mine.

One of which, as Gosthacked helpfully points out, is yours.
