naomiglover Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 Elvis Costello cancels concerts in Israel in protest at treatment of Palestinians In a statement on his website, Costello explained: "I must believe that the audience for the coming concerts would have contained many people who question the policies of their government on settlement and deplore conditions that visit intimidation, humiliation or much worse on Palestinian civilians in the name of national security. "I am also keenly aware of the sensitivity of these themes in the wake of so many despicable acts of violence perpetrated in the name of liberation." http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/may/18/elvis-costello-cancels-israel-concerts Recently, Santana and Gil Scott-Heron who were part of the movement to boycott Apartheid South Africa had also canceled their shows in Israel. This is how it started with apartheid South Africa with cultural and academic boycotts by artists and schools. Quote Jewish Voice for Peace Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East

bush_cheney2004 Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 Nothing new with Gil Scott-Heroin...he's made a living by boycotting everything. He's still angry about President Reagan winning big in 1980. That's when I started boycotting his records! Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

bush_cheney2004 Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 Did you start boycotting Costello and Santana as well? I was never a Costello fan, and Santana sold out years ago. I've made references to Scott-Heron before, as he is a musically inclined militant icon for a completely different time and context. Man was he pissed at Reagan. LOL! Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

I specifically remember the single The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. Edited May 26, 2010 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
M.Dancer Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 I started boycotting Costello coincidentally around the time he started sounding like a washed up busker. waldo Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 found the OP's linked article's last paragraph more interesting - the reference to Chomsky being denied entry to the West Bank to speak at a Palestinian university. Israeli authorities prevented the Jewish American academic Noam Chomsky from entering the West Bank on Sunday to give a lecture at a Palestinian university near Ramallah. Chomsky was told that the Israeli authorities did not like his political views. or... from Haaretz: Interior Ministry seeking IDF approval to let American professor just into West Bank; rights group: Decision characteristic of totalitarian regimeIn a telephone interview with Channel 10, Chomsky said the interrogators had told him he had written things that the Israeli government did not like. "I suggested [the interrogator try to] find any government in the world that likes anything I say," he said. Quote

M.Dancer Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 ... person of colour What an annoying label... Recently I was discussing a recruitment of a person who was highly qualified....in the synopsis amongst here achievements, my collegue noted that she was a "woman of colour" making her very unique in her field. I responded that she was exactly what we were looking for and I prefered to have a 'woman of colour' front and centre...it it would be a welcome change from all the coloured women we normally get... It took him a few more emails to understand where I was coming from... 1) That I didn't care what a person's colour was 2) That whether someone is a 'woman of colour or a 'coloured woman', it is a superflous label we can surely ignore. I'm with Dancer...what a stupid ass term...right up there with the moronic term "visible minority". As for purchasing Scott-Heron's record albums, it might help you to understand that it was purchased at a military base where steely eyed killers enjoyed I&I before heading out on another imperialist mission for the Empire. Not really. Buying something for ironic reasons makes sense sometimes, but not when it's something so obscure. How would you prefer me to refer to your skin tone and/or background ? Cosby-like ? Octo-roon ? I am kidding you, of course, because I take you to be my friend - as far as that goes around here. If you like, you may refer to my grey pallor - something like that of Mr. Furley on 3s Company - or just call me an ugly duckling. In other words, if I offend then it's unintentional and you should simply eviscerate me in an entertaining way. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner
Sir Bandelot Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 Seems like you only offended in trying NOT to offend. In doing so you went against the standard group-think around here. That was your mistake. Anyway, you couldn't win on that no subject matter what you said. Seems the only way to not offend, is to say nothing at all. Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted May 27, 2010 Report Posted May 27, 2010 (edited) Seems like you only offended in trying NOT to offend. In doing so you went against the standard group-think around here. That was your mistake. It's not so much offensive as it is just unnecessary...Dancer's main point. At other levels it is patronizing and simplistic, not recognizing the complexities that reside beyond the simple notion of "colour" and any assumptions about politics or education. In short, it is a very obsolete viewpoint. The funny part is that a guy like Gil Scott-Heron would go militant on your ass and write another angry rant just for using such a term. Anyway, you couldn't win on that no subject matter what you said. Seems the only way to not offend, is to say nothing at all. Safe play if not sure what to do. Otherwise prepare for incoming mortar fire. Edited May 27, 2010 by bush_cheney2004 Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
