This is interesting. If what we're reading is accurate what we're seeing is the negotiations for Canada's accession to the common market, being that there would be a free flow of not only goods, but labour. Now seeing how the basis for the entire Union is the common market, Canada would essentially be past the half way point for full accession.

The real question here isn't whether there should be a free trade deal. It's obvious that Canada needs to attempt to diversify trade. However, would people here support sending representation to Brussels and the benefits (as well as some of the dangers) of at least partial membership in the EU? In my honest opinion, partial membership would be the best route. Despite what's going on with Greece right now, the type of transnational governance the EU employs is the future. Not to mention that the EU is the largest economy on the planet.

I would argue for membership along the lines of England which retains greater autonomy than EU members on the continent.

Just gonna throw this out there...

Lets lose the economy so we don't have to worry about recession or depressions anymore. Let's use the planets resources to produce what we need to survive and prosper while at the same time we could take of this planet. Lets rid the world of copyright and patents and let information flow freely. Let's unify for the greater good of everyone. Let's tear down the walls we put into place.

Let's not......the Hippies sold out and became corporate CEOs instead.

You bet. Which actually kind of jives with what's going on. He said it in a really stupid way but trade barriers are coming down and the world is coming together into supranational entities leaving the traditional sense of the nation behind. The only country that seems really phobic towards such ideas is the US. Oh, and Switzerland, but who cares about them anyhow.

That wasn't meant as a jab, just a general comment on nations embracing supranational governance bodies.

Nicky, don't waste your time with this blowhard...He's just trying to turn this into a "We're better than you!",and,"Canadainas are so smug with their false sense of superiority,so I'm here to constantly put them in their place", conversation.

Take my advice...Hit the ignore button...The clown takes a walk...Silence is wonderful...

Somebody doesn't know what "ignore" means.

Inuit sue EU....here's your free trade:

Canadian Inuit have filed a lawsuit in the European General Court to overturn EU legislation banning the import of seal products into EU countries. The lawsuit seeks annulment of Regulation (EC) No 1007/2009 of the European Parliament and Council of September 16, 2009 on trade in seal products. The lawsuit comes as the annual seal hunt in the Canadian arctic is beginning, with the Canadian government authorizing hunters (including Inuit) to take up to 330,000 seals.

Wait, you mean to tell me there's been an ignore button? Where is this wonderful thing.

You mean like the UN, or WTO, or IMF, or NAFTA or.....name any number of other such bodies/treaties that have existed for years.

NAFTA isn't a supranational governance organization it's a treaty. The UN, and with it the IMF, WTO and World Bank as they all operate together, on the otherhand, there isn't much support for, now is there?

Hell, the last US Ambassador to the UN hated it.

I think I said that above...see the word "treaties"?

Support is directly proportional to member objectives. All I'm saying is that we already have "supranational" organizations with very mixed results.

If you got rid of copyright and patents then who would bother to invent anything new? It takes hours and hours for days and days to write software programs. How would you pay your rent? Why would you waste your time?

Generally, any musician who has to work a day job to pay the bills kinda sucks at music. That's because he just can't spend the time or accumulate the experience when he's gotta eat somehow! So he writes a hit tune but there's no copyright. So it doesn't make him any money.

How the hell can that work?

Perhaps you can explain it better. It just seems kinda like a creativity killer to me.

Look at the top of the page wgere it says "Signed in as...."...keep going to your right and you will come to "Manage Ignored Losers...er..I mean...Users"...Check it out! It's spectacular!

You won't keep having these facile circular arguements with a blowhard twit who thinks it's his job to put you in your place because you are NOT from the USA...

Silence is great....

I'm all for freer trade with the EU, even if it does continue to sell Gavage-based foie gras.

Well, I've mentioned before that I tend to avoid EU products, if I can.

I have relatives that are sealers down east. Do unto others as they have done unto you, I say. With some people it's the only way to teach 'em!

Fair enough. I couldn't see the deal going through without a resolution to the issue of sealing, or Czech visas, being resolved.

We would use the planets resources to survive, what do we need to survive. Food, water, shelter. We will get these things for everyone, you will no longer will have to work to have food, water or shelter. I'm talking about eliminating free trade all together, no capitalism, no socialism, no economy, just us working together to make the world a better place for all of us.

I don't like how we have upper, middle and lower class. We all deserve to have the same opportunities and benefits as each other.

The creative mind will never cease to exist, we will always have challenges that will face us in the future. Eliminating copyrights and patents would let information flow freely, everyone would be able to use and expand on that information.

In every sector of society from the economy to politics we compete against each other, why? We would be far more prosperous if we all worked together for the greater good of everyone.

Right now it seems like we are slaves to the super rich.

I want change and not Obama change.

As ever, it's difficult to provide specifics as to how this change would happen. To me, it seems difficult to imagine that the change we have already experienced could happen much faster.

What change ?

- Respect for diversity

- Increased productivity

- Explosion of culture

- More choices for all

I had a discussion with somebody who was trying to say that we'd be better off if we got rid of banks and carried big bags of grain around all day. Like you, she was a romantic.
