Bush administration in the United States, which made humanitarian assistance conditional upon a ‘global gag rule’ that required all non-governmental organizations receiving federal funding to refrain from promoting medically-sound family planning.” Kind of wonder if Carolyn Parrish wrote that piece of nonsense. The wording is a direct assault on the NDP brain trust, such as it is. ....and it is beneath contempt. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us

Is anyone going to buy this? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/blogs/bureau-blog/tories-oppose-anti-american-motion-on-family-planning/article1509453/ How is this going off the so-called deep-end? Obama just recently signed an executive order banning the use of any federal funds used for the funding of abortion in regards to the new healthcare legislation. If anything, the Conservatives are more inline with the Obama administration and general American attitudes on abortion. I think it's immoral to try and export radical abortion type ideas to other countries would don't agree with those ideas. Especially when some of the countries involved in providing the maternal health initiatives, don't even practice that type of thing themselves. This is just Iggy's pathetic way to stir up a quiet and settled abortion debate in Canada. It's the only way he thinks he can gain in the polls. Pathetic. Quote

If we're going to be frank, the only reason why he did it is because that's the only way he could get the bill. Furthermore, the "global gag rule" brought in by Reagan, suspended by Clinton, brought back in by Bush "drumroll" has been suspended by Obama. The Obama administration supports contraception as a part of international maternal health packages. Macleans got a press release out of the state department. Most of the G8 supports it. So, how again is it a radical position? The attack in terms of trying to bring in right wing george bush style policy has been stated by people like Obama and Clinton, so therefore, how anti-american can it be? It's just a desperate attempt to obfuscate. It's a serious issue that needs to be debated. Contraception and abortion in funding for maternal health clinics abroad has always been a part of Canadian foreign policy. We deserve an explanation on why it's being removed or only now "considered" and not included. We also have a right not to treated like morons being told it's anti-american to question the government's position on abortion. Jeez, isn't that funny? The CPC uses America to bash Ignatieff's brains in with the "just visiting" ads but now we hate America because god forbid we ask questions of our government. Bush administration in the United States 1) The use of right wing as a perjorative linked to the name without a title..is rude in itself. Presidents, even ex-presidents are refered to as President Carter, President Bush.... 2) Failed right wing: Millions of Americans who voted for that administration might be a little miffed at being called "failed right wingers" 3) The perceived need by the Liberals to frame a Canadian policy in American terms is not only insulting to Americans, it insults the intelligence of Canadians. The accidental tourist was left standing alone ineptly tryuing to explain why the minority government was able to defeat the Bob Rae motion which slagged the policies of the former President Bush and his administration? Who pawned him? Rae? Did Rae insert the slaggingf reference of failed right wing policies as a poison pill? Did Liberal back benchers pawn Rae and Ignatieff, sending a message that the American bashing past of Turner and Parish are to remain history? Who cares....Ignatieff got pawned! Wow...talk about taking a quote of context. "No, I think that there is no need to mention abortion," she told reporters. "I mean, full reproductive services is very clear. I think that . . . termination of pregnancy is a very difficult thing for lots of people, but it needs to be there. It is, in terms of a service offered to women. We want every child to be a planned child and pregnancy and still 13% of the deaths attributed to pregnancy are from unsafe abortions." Quote
M.Dancer Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 Wow...talk about taking a quote of context. Yes, no need to mention what almost one half of canadians are opposed to...better it be...implied and that way the political fall out is minimized. nicky10013 Posted March 24, 2010 Author Report Posted March 24, 2010 Yes, no need to mention what almost one half of canadians are opposed to...better it be...implied and that way the political fall out is minimized. So? The number of people that support it and don't support is near 50-50 which is more support than either party will garner. The people who vote based on social values already vote Conservative. If this becomes an election issue and the Liberals win more pro-choice votes..IE women (especially since they didn't carry women which is a traditional stronghold of the party) they win the election. Not taking this position would lose them votes. They'd lose their traditional base and wouldn't win any conservative votes. Not that this would become a big election issue anyways. Quote
