What are you talking about? The religous right shuts down debates when they don't like what they are hearing all of the time.

Yes!!!

And it's wrong!!!!

....except for Calgary...nice try.

That's one of the few places in this country that would openly support her zaniness...

Absolutely wrong...I did recently point out that these people were as simple minded as the Tea Party folks?

Pretty disgusting,frankly...Pea brains who can't stand someone having a contrary point of view who don't have the intellectual capacity to debate something civilly ended up Anne Coultering themselves....

The problem with this is, no debate with an Anne Coulter can be "civil". I see no value in attempting to be reasonable, or expecting an intelligent debate with someone who frequently uses words like raghead, etc. It's the bleeding heart liberals who are outraged that she doesn't get to have her say. You people and your insistence on giving anyone the right to speak freely.

Ok then, how about we give David Duke some air time as well, or Ernst Zundel, or Ayman al-Zawahiri? Of course we won't be doing that either.

Complete waste of time.

Why not?

What's so fragile about free speech in Canada?

If they felt her safety was at risk it's highly likely there were threats made against Coulter. I think it's too soon for more details to to be made public in order not to inflame what is still an explosive situation.

Pretty big leap to fears for her safety to death threats against her and Ezzy....

The debate does not have to be civil. If one wants to engage her, just use hit and run tactics. Make her play your game.

Just let her do her thing and don't worry about it, she'll dig her own hole. It's like a bum on the street babbling nonsense, does anyone pay attention to him? No, he's a speaker without an audience, which begs the question If a tree falls in the forest with nobody around does it make a noise?

Precisely...where is it written that discourse must be "civil"?

Those three are equally odious, but the dimwits who actually follow anything that people such as that are so thick they would follow any nutjob out there.I remember about 20 years ago I was wtahcing something on the tube about free speech and they were showing a Klan member being defended by a black lawyer. The lawyer said it best, and he was'nt the first to make the point, that he was completely repulsed by the Klansman's behaviour and things he talked about but he defended him because the Klansman had every right to say those things.

Did you forget what you just typed?

I don't know anyone, other than the Rabblesque left, that thinks shutting down debate with someone one does'nt necessarily agree with is a good thing.

I didn't say they did. I said that's what the letter pertained to, pointing out that it wasn't in regards to her being a woman, her religion, or her politics as claimed in the post I was responding to.

Furthermore, Houle didn't say they were, either; he reminded her of Canada's hate laws so she would be aware that there is a difference between the U.S. and Canada, in case she was unaware, so she wouldn't say anything that would unknowingly get her into trouble.

Did you read the letter? I can't begin to understand why Canada's Human Rights Commission would even begin to waste their time or money entertaining her claim. I'm sure they get a lot of nonsense complaints from a lot of kooks.

Well said, I agree with you.I think her problem is she has a eating disorder and her brain isn't getting the nutrients it needs. I had a friend who didn't eat right was as thin or thinner than Coulter and died of a rare cancer. She probably has no life per se, two broken engagements, no man can take her views. Pity.

Houle...what a tool:

Dear Ms. Coulter,

I understand that you have been invited by University of Ottawa Campus Conservatives to speak at the University of Ottawa this coming Tuesday. We are, of course, always delighted to welcome speakers on our campus and hope that they will contribute positively to the meaningful exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of a great university campus. We have a great respect for freedom of expression in Canada, as well as on our campus, and view it as a fundamental freedom, as recognized by our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I would, however, like to inform you, or perhaps remind you, that our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or "free speech") in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States. I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here.

You will realize that Canadian law puts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression. For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges. Outside of the criminal realm, Canadian defamation laws also limit freedom of expression and may differ somewhat from those to which you are accustomed. I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind.

There is a strong tradition in Canada, including at this university, of restraint, respect and consideration in expressing even provocative and controversial opinions and urge you to respect that Canadian tradition while on our campus. Hopefully, you will understand and agree that what may, at first glance, seem like unnecessary restrictions to freedom of expression do, in fact, lead not only to a more civilized discussion, but to a more meaningful, reasoned and intelligent one as well.

I hope you will enjoy your stay in our beautiful country, city and campus.

Sincerely,

Francois Houle,

Vice-President Academic and Provost, University of Ottawa

Who decides what are "reasonable limits"?

I don't remember being consulted

That's it? Sounds perfectly reasonable, apparently free speech hasn't thickened Americans skin very much.

"Anne Coulter to Tour Canada"... What could possibly go wrong ?

This is possibly the most ill-conceived tour since Malcolm MacLaren booked the Sex Pistols in the deep south...

Well...She's returning to the homeland of her ideological brethren in this country...
