I have no idea how they legislate free speech in those other countries or which ones even have freedom of speech laws. Do you?

Yes, they put people in jail for dissent and so forth. Sorry, but from your comment it seemed like you had an opinion about what happens in other countries.

Sometimes people try to make comparisons to other countries in these arguments, which I don't think apply to our situation. I misunderstood and thought you were doing that.

Sounds to me like reasonable grounds for her to be arrested in Ottawa tonight, then.

for what she has yet to say?

yes other wise why woud she be here at all!!.

Because the right wing kooks who believe in the Tao of Coulter are willing to hand over thier money to her and participate in her likeminded reaffirmation excercise.

I guess the question is, whether or not it can be interpreted that she is inciting hatred that "is likely to lead to a breach of the peace..."

Section 319 - Every one who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of ........

a) occurred in Canada and the victim of the practice was at the time of the act or omission either lawfully present in Canada or, if temporarily absent from Canada, entitled to return to Canada;

13. (1) It is a discriminatory practice for a person or a group of persons acting in concert to communicate telephonically or to cause to be so communicated, repeatedly, in whole or in part by means of the facilities of a telecommunication undertaking within the legislative authority of Parliament, any matter that is likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt by reason of the fact that that person or those persons are identifiable on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination.

It seems to pass the test for me.

it needs to also be noted that Canadians have more fee speech than anyone in the us!!!

That's not true. The HRC's are a prime example

In this context, likely doesn't mean what she may say one day (even our judges do not yet tell the furture) but what she has said and is seen as likely to...

...as in, that last post is likely to cause a ruckus.

Nope. It's just nice to get some diversity of opinion, especially on University campuses. And the money wasn't much of a problem. Paying a whole $10 to see Ezra and Ann is well worth it. Especially when you consider it costs more than that to go see one of those stupid hollywood pieces of crap in the theater.

And I enjoy seeing many different kinds of speakers. Aside from Coulter, I've also gone to see Hitchens at Western as well. I would have gone to see former President Clinton speak when he was in London at the John Labatt Center, but I didn't find out about it until the tickets were sold out.

Your prejudices are your own.

Interesting..

A couple questions then...

Do you agree with the policies that someone like Coutler espouses and do you like her "linguistic approach" to getting her views across?

LOL. So now a quote "breach of the peace" is considered hate speech? OMG!

As Ezra Levant pointed out last night, many of the most important social changes in Canada and America came about when the only power those being oppressed had, was free speech. And that particular free speech, was offensive to many.

You don't think the insistance of women being equals, and deserving the right to vote wasn't offensive to many in the 1920's?

You don't think that the civil rights movement, and the equality preached by people like Dr. King, didn't offend a vast amount of people?

In fact, these particular movements, wouldn't have succeeded without the freedom of speech, and the freedom to offend.

In terms of policy, I agree with some, disagree with others. In terms of linguistic style and approach, I think she's very talented, and I find it quite enjoyable. Not to mention very clever and witty.

That's a little cryptic...Could you be a little more specific on the policies of Coulter?

Am I to understand that the use of the term"faggot" to describe a homosexual and "Raghead" in describing someone from the Middle East is "talented","enjoyable","very clever",and,"witty"?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that maybe asking for equal rights was not just a thinly veiled attempt to piss off the public.

I think that pretty well sums up what Coulter is about...another one of those right wing extremists...

You're absolutely right. But it did. It also was greatly offensive to some.

I'd have to see the context in which they are used. The terms by themselves are certainly not necessarily clever or witty.

If you think the use of terms like faggot or raghead is offensive, god forbid Chris Rock ever speaks at U of O...

I'm sort of ambivalent on the words...Occasionally,Chris Rock can be described as clever...The difference is that Rock is comedian who does'nt seem to take himself too seriously.Coulter is a political "commentator" who has a tendancy to invoke a certain reaction over certain foreign policies and ideological differences.

There is a bit of a difference...

I agree. There is a difference, as you clearly pointed out. Having said that, I'm not overly crazy about Chris Rock, either. I think he goes too far and quite frankly, I don't see the humor in it nor do I find him particularly clever. I just don't see what's clever about using words for nothing more than shock value. A six year old could do that.

I would argue coulter is an entertainer no different that Moore. Well, Moore is fatter....

Pretty much...Anne is about Anne and she plays to a certain ideological audience that gets off on hearing basic inflammatory things...I'll say this...She knows her audience.

Coulter is not an entertainer. She's an author, a legal correspondent and a columnist and above all.... a right wing shill.

Were it not for her countless bombastic statements, she'd likely end up being a table dancer...

I have never heard her called a correspondant much less a legal correspondant...

What can I say? Check her website. Its under the menu item "My Life"

Coulter is the legal correspondent for Human Events and writes a popular syndicated column for Universal Press Syndicate.
