Yeah...just as I thought....the US has a lot more "neighbours". It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood A beautiful day for a neighbor Would you be mine Could you be mine It's a neighborly day in this beautywood A neighborly day for a beauty Would you be mine Could you be mine I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you So, let's make the most of this beautiful day Since we're together we might as well say Would you be mine, could you be mine Won't you be my neighbor Won't you please, won't you please Please won't you be my neighbor Quote Economics trumps Virtue.
M.Dancer Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 (edited) No, it has everything to do with some type of insecurity that you have about your own country. I'm quite happy with mine, and so I don't need to compare it to yours. One thing that has bored me to no end but has never the less attracted quite a bit of attention here is the American public heath debate. Would such a debate in Peru or Brazil or Portugal get so much Canadian media attention....for an initiative that has no impact on 99% of us? I think one reason so many seemed interested in this american domestic debate is that adoption of public heathcare would be seen by canadians as an endorsement of our system and vindication of billions of tax payer dollars invested..... The story did not get nearly the same space or time overseas....with good reason...France, The UK..etc etc do not look to North America for validation.... Definitely the case....it was the continuation of a long ideolgical battle...would they....could they...adopt a single payer system like Canada's? Nope. I disagree. Canadians overall seem to like their system, with or without vindication. It often entered the news because some Americans spend so much time comparing themselves to us when it comes to healthcare. It also enters the news because of the level of US and Canadian cross border migration. It also happens because yes, we do tend to compare ourselves to the US. It simply is the reality. It's really not important when you talk about Canadian culture though, which exists without comparisons to the US. Quote

Smallc Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 which is why some no one wrestler got so many responses in this forum? I mean if we don't care what they think.... Because we, like so many people around the world, dislike outside criticism. News ain't news without news consumers. That's right, and the endless comparisons to Canada made us more willing consumers than usual. I don't. I don't either most of the time. Many people do. It doesn't really matter to me. Of course it does...if we could only convince canadians and the canadian cultural industries... Agreed in many cases. Quote
Jack Weber Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 Oy vey! Right... conservatives have no voice in the media... it's all a vast liberal left-wing conspiracy to deny conservatives a voice - yes, clearly, Olbermann could have gone on and listed another dozen+ examples of prolific conservative right-wing shills and they would all, collectively, make a demand for the "equal time" that, apparently, they're not getting... while at the same time, all blatantly ignoring their prominence - their dominance within the media! The right wing carnival barkers do tend to whine, however, they have a gullible captive audience that buys this cr@p without question.Whever someone comes on her and starts saying that the US is run by the left wing liberal media I'm breaking out this thing and skewering them.By the way,Olbermann made Frum's case better than Frum. If you look at Canada and the US around 1960, they were very similar, then 1985 less so, and today - a lot more different. Well, at least a few months ago. bloodyminded Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 What Canadian culture? It has yet to be defined in terms other than not American. Real insight is your domain, even if it means peering at what the Americans are doing..over and over....to find out what that means. And the grotesque, wet, sloppy sounds of American right-wing nationalistic masturbation continues unabated..... Gross.
