Wilber Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Fair enough...it's logical that Canadian women (or men) would seek scholarships in the USA if/when spots are filled in Canada, which clearly would be the best environment for support. In many respects, hockey is less tainted than other big money sports programs, and that is to be admired. Many years ago, before big television and endorsement money came along, amateur athletics enjoyed a following for purer competitive reasons. It has reached the point where there are fewer and fewer sports where true amateurs have a chance at an Olympic podium. There aren't many sports left where one can be competitive without doing it full time. Quote "Never trust a man who has not a single redeeming vice". WSC
capricorn Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 It would also be a good thing for the sport if someone other than Canada and the US were in the gold medal game. The IOC has been making noises about this. Women's ice hockey must improve if it is to remain on the Olympic program, International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said Thursday.Noting that the sport remains lopsided bacause of powerhouse teams like Canada and the United States, Rogge said he's willing to give the sport more time to develop since it was only admitted to Olympics at the 1998 Nagano Games. But he said he would be sad to see the sport removed. http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/2010wintergames/Women+hockey+must+improve+else+Jacques+Rogge/2612741/story.html It stands to reason that countries will not invest in a sport they don't think they have a chance at winning internationally or at least not getting embarrassed. Obviously, women's hockey is one such sport. I don't know for a fact, but it appears to me most countries prefer grooming men hockey players for Olympics and international competition. bush_cheney2004 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 The IOC has been making noises about this. The IOC has been getting pressure for other reasons from the opposite direction...gender equity. This blew up in their faces at Vancouver. In a Classic catch-22, women's teams can't improve without more competiton and support. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

All it takes is a commitment from a country to do well in a sport. It looks like the Finns are making that commitment to womens hockey. Good on them. China is at the top of the heap in several sports which they didn't even participate in 20 years ago. Canada has a history of doing well in new winter Olympic sports like freestyle skiing and then fading. We were at the top of the heap in aerials a few years back and this year, not one medal. Why, because other countries decided they wanted medals and did what it takes to get them. You can't do it on the cheap and expect success no matter how dedicated your athletes are. CANADIEN Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 It's awesome. At least the women aren't the choke artists the men seem to be so far. The women are owning the podium but the men are shitting the bed with their choke artistry. The only chocking that almost happened was when I read that piece of cr*p you wrote. In short lets all rally behind our PM Stephen Harper who has given us this time off in order to enjoy these games and our athletes without being distracted by the shennanigans of our MP's. I have been able to do my job AND follow the Olympics. Parliaement would have been able to do its job and the vast majority of Canadians would have been able to deal with it and the Games at the same time. Go Canada Go! Quote
Shady Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 It's awesome. At least the women aren't the choke artists the men seem to be so far. The women are owning the podium but the men are shitting the bed with their choke artistry. Looks like the men won four medals yesterday, two of them gold. Perhaps your description of them as choke artists was a bit premature. No offense to the women, but in some of their sports there isn't nearly the level of competition that there is for the men. Take hockey for example. It's them, and the Americans. There isn't another competitive women's hockey team. So they're basically guaranteed at least a silver medal. The men don't have that luxury. They have several talented teams to have to beat. Just off the top of my head, USA, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic. Quote
Smallc Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 And the men just got one more gold where the women didn't. Mens team pursuit. Canada beat the USA. If we were to get two more golds, we would tie Russia and Norway for the most ever gold medals. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted February 27, 2010 Report Posted February 27, 2010 An unashamed theory abounds in this Olympic city that all the gold medals Canada have won at these Winter Games — 10, as of writing — will not amount to a hill of beans if their men’s ice hockey team do not on Sunday skate to the one that really, really counts. link USA! USA! USA! Quote

Guest American Woman Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 (edited) Right back at you with the US earning the most medals in these games. Quite a haul of hardware. Thank you. Canada and the U.S. are kicking ass, eh? With a surge of victories in the final days of the games, including two more on Saturday, Canada has won more gold medals than any host nation in Winter Olympic history. Awesome! Gold for Kevin Martin and his rink. We've now tied the gold medal record. Both of our countries may be breaking records today: the U.S. will break the 'most medals' record today, and Canada may (if you get lucky ) break the 'most Golds' record with a hockey win.
