I saw the very same thing a week so ago overhead - two small jets flying very close on either side of a larger one - from the north-west and parallel to the west coast of Vancouver Island. I suppose they could have been on an approach to Vancouver or perhaps Seattle but they still seemed to be at quite an altitude.

I half expected to find a story about another underwear bomber or some-such thing on the news.

I guess it was just some other no-account big-shot returning under the illusion and assumed pretence of honour.

The Harper gang got a big surprise when leaving Switzerland, 2 Air Force jets flew beside the PM plane for a short time then departed. The PMO is saying it was a "honour guard" but after listening to conservations that went on at the Summit , I think they wanted to make sure he was gone!!

Better a man brave enough to stand up for his convictions than a man willing to go along with whatever the prevailing winds tell him is most popular.

True, but this guy is wrong on another of accounts.

I don't know if he's wrong or not, or if he's wrong, how wrong he is, a lot or just a little. But the point remains it would be infitely easier for him to pull a "Chretien" and sign any old thing, make mouth noises about how deeply he cares about global warming, and then not do anything.

He's a politician serving within a representative democracy. The only bravery I expect from him is the courage to respect the voice of the people and act accordingly.

Pissed me off when he said "Canada thinks" etc.. acting as if he is some sort of ambassador or something.

It wouldn't of bothered me if he said "my government thinks.. who the hell does he think he is speaking for the nation.

What a donkey.. looked like he thouroughly pissed of the french.

I was here.

Its a sign of increasing sympathy to the Christian faith. And yes, he did piss off the French. Rob Anders would be proud.

Ever since everyone at the global warming carbon summit bailed and went to the Danish Kings estate for dinner instead (in Christianborg palace of course) Canada has been on better ties with certain solidly not neutral religious groups.

What Canada needs right now - is more military support from outside of the US and Britain if we hope to achieve more independance. Running to the Christian faith at this point in time is much like any individual running to any church in time of need. Not that I necessarily agree with it, but there you have it. Personally I would see it as no different than Harper running to China to ask for military support (but he does not seem the man to be able to make a racial leap of faith, much like Rob Anders.)

Now - The Pope could care less. The Pope actually wants more tolerance in the world and a spreading of all faiths or even no faith, because he realizes that past a certain point - stability requires glue not oil and nukes know no faith. You can't poke someone in the arm and make them change faith, eventually it always ends up in a nuke fight.

That the French submarine "Le Terrible" launched ICBM's at Newfoundland - should be a warning sign to everyone in Canada that they have no clue how much Harper is consolidating power, taking sides and making enemies.

I think that when the Russians flew the TU-95 nuke bomber into Canadian airspace during Obamas first visit - It really rattled Harpers cage. That we recieved no air support from the US, requiring our own aging CF-18's to shoo them off - probably rattled him even more.

I don't think you know what you're talking about most of the time. We keep our very capable F-18s (which are currently undergoing a multibillion dollar refit) ready at all times, more so now than probably any other time in a long time. Why would we get air support in our own airspace when we don't need it?

You must remember - this is about 24 hours before Obamas visit. Personally I just think it was a Russian test of how much the US would extend their influence and preparedness to fulfill their obligation under NORAD, where the US and Canada act as a single defensive force against an agressor. Obviously - NORAD means nothing...

And a side note as to the ICBM's that France launched over Newfoundland. They are SLBM M51 class - meaning capable of Mach 15 (18,000 km/hour) Pretty impressive top of the line nuke launchers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Upheaval I think the French will probably launch one over Eastern Canada every so often just to remind people of history.

oh yeah....we'd better all run and hide I guess.

It might be prudent, for a newfie anyhow.

IMO - My guess...

France launched an extremely low altitude (not high arc) very very high speed missle to see if Canadas aging radar system could pick it up.

The US's missle defense test failed - because the radar had difficulty tracking the high speed missile (so the official story goes)

A missle flying a thousand feet or lower, which you can do with new 2010 technology missle based on solid rocket fuel propellant (or a guided Tomahawk) should be able to fly under the radar. Equally - a missle flying at 18,000 km/h - can actually evade a radar in pure speed waiting for the "second" pass if still based on the old rotation type of detector.

There are only so many places in the world you can test launch a 10,000 km range missile without raising a complete shitstorm. Northern Canada is one of them. The South pole is probably the other.

Well, Mach 15....that explains how a run of the mill digital camera was able to take such a clear picture of them...

They don't *have* to run them at full speed. Besides - they only run at 18,000 km/h at maximum - air pressure, density and moisture at sea level will quickly slow them to 600km/h in the descent.

http://www.buzzhumor.com/videos/11603/Mythbusters_Bullet_Proof_Water_Test

A foot of equivalent water density is extremely effective at slowing any object.

IE: A bullet will lose much of its speed and become non-lethal in a *relatively* short distance.

The M51 is interesting, in that it is tipped with a radio scattering extended nose (to avoid radar) which is a huge improvement over the M45, which uses absorption technology more like a stealth bomber. Stealth technology of course being old technology already.

If they were testing the scattering tech, they probably slowed the missle to as slow as possible to determine how good the scattering technology is.

The last time the French launched an ICBM internationally was a M45 to French Guyana (South America) in 2004. There is also an interesting history there with the Brits too.

Give it about 8 years or so. North Korea should be launching missiles to the shore of California by then...

And believe it or not - I don't believe the US would be North Koreas prime target - Kim Jong Il hates Imperialists just as much. It really doesn't matter who launches.
