DogOnPorch Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 The very effective Su-85 tank destroyer...saw use up until 1944 when is was replaced by the Su-100 as the 85mm gun had managed to be fitted to the T-34. The Su-100...not that different...bigger gun...different hatch arangement. This one in Egyptian markings from the 6 Day War. Fewer made than the Su-85. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
DogOnPorch Posted December 6, 2009 Author Report Posted December 6, 2009 (edited) One of the last working T-34/85s in Europe. Note that both the Su-85 and Su-100 used the T-34s hull and track assembly. Perhaps, historically, the best tank ever made. Here's Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson driving a T-34/85 (in Russian) Edited December 6, 2009 by DogOnPorch Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
DogOnPorch Posted December 6, 2009 Author Report Posted December 6, 2009 Here's the T-34/76 (for the 76mm gun) being hauled from a swamp. Note the German markings (captured). This model is the 1943 version...the give-away being the German style coupula on the turret. The 1942 model had what was called 'Mickey Mouse ears' due to the twin circular hatches with no coupula while the 1940 and 1941 models had what was known as the 'barn door' hatch (big and squarish). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kKLbKHNquE Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
DogOnPorch Posted December 6, 2009 Author Report Posted December 6, 2009 (edited) The Su-152 self-propelled gun...the '152' being the size of the gun: 152mm. This one, rather than using the T-34 hull, used the KV-1/KV-2 hull. Generally used to fire HE, it still carried a compliment of solid steel AP shot just in case it ran into other tanks. The KV-1 (early model)...very short clip. Edited December 6, 2009 by DogOnPorch Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
DogOnPorch Posted December 7, 2009 Author Report Posted December 7, 2009 The Renault FT 17 from WW1...it also saw action in WW2...particularly in France in 1940, but also in backwaters like Yugoslavia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU8HGs_GrRw Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
DogOnPorch Posted December 7, 2009 Author Report Posted December 7, 2009 The Sturmgeschutz IIIG...essentially the German version of the SU-85. Mounted on the old Mk III chasis, its fixed 7.5 cm KwK 40 anti-tank cannon was capable with dealing with any Allied tank of its day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_III http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturmgesch%C3%BCtz_III Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

M.Dancer Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 My favourite for a couple of reasons. The first tank I ever saw up close (was once Canada's MBT) I had a matchbox squad of them as a kid, along with a few Ferrets... The Ferrat is pretty cool. A lot like the older Daimler Benz AC from WW2. The Daimler had the 2 pounder anti-tank gun which was very effective against most Italian AFVs (and some German) in the desert. DogOnPorch Posted December 8, 2009 Author Report Posted December 8, 2009 The M3/M5 Stuart...a very successful Allied light tank from WW2. Small enough to be of use in the jungles of the Pacific/SEA/ABDA theaters. Also saw much action in Europe and North Africa. The 37mm gun, though small, was very high velocity making it a fairly good tank killer...unless you faced one of the bigger German tanks. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

The Stuart was their first tank, of course. Amazing how it could wipe out a brigade of Tigers. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
DogOnPorch Posted December 8, 2009 Author Report Posted December 8, 2009 Here's a bit of bad news. The Jagdpanther (Hunting Panther). There were no real Allied equivalents to this beast and other German super-heavies. Its 88mm cannon could rip through any armor of the time. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

DogOnPorch Posted December 9, 2009 Author Report Posted December 9, 2009 (edited) The Brit Mark IV is one that stands out for me the most. Simply because of it's unique shape, The Mk IV is pretty weird alright. Cramped. You used to be able to go inside the one at the Imperial War Museum. Not sure if one still could. DogOnPorch Posted December 11, 2009 Author Report Posted December 11, 2009 Here's a deadly combo from the early part of the war...the 88mm FlaK cannon being towed by a Sd.Kfz._251 half track. Normally, the 88 would be towed by a Sd.Kfz. 7 as the 251 didn't have enough horse power to tow such a weapon over open ground...OK on the flat and paved, no doubt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8.8_cm_FlaK_18/36/37/41 Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
